This is the story of an Indian man, of the cultured Bengali middle classes, who marries a beautiful Calcutta wife in an arranged marriage, then takes her to his new home in New York City. He is called Gogol, because his father liked the 19th Century Russian writer of Shinel (here called "The Overcoat", though "Greatcoat" is a more exact meaning). The film chronicles their move not only across continents but upwards in New York or is it New Jersey suburban society (they start off in a horrid part of what looks like the Lower East Side).
Much is made of the difference between New York City and Calcutta, though in essence these two huge dirty cities have a lot in common and I wonder how long it will be before NYC has more Indians ... Read More:

I didn't expect a masterpiece with this movie and I certainly didn't get one. What I did get though was a pretty entertaining 90 minutes or so.It was much as I expected it to be and in that sense 'Poseidon' did it's job.
The acting is hammy at times, the dialogue is cheesy in the extreme and the storyline is overly familiar. But the effects are OK,the action kicks in quickly and the movie isn't overlong. As stated earlier, this isn't a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination but as a piece of Saturday night entertainment it definitely does it's job.
Watch it,forget about it but be prepared to be entertained for a short while. Not bad.

Zach Braff's most recent swill Last Kiss pised me off more than any cinema experience all year. From the grating, false characters to the painfully self-conscious script, I was always aware that I was watching some smug kid's assumption of what love and relationships are all about in the real world.
So contemptuous, so vile, so insipid, and so heavy-handed in its calculated sweetness, that it set new standards for what is becoming the only type of independent film left.

Where were you on September 11th, 2001? A little over three years ago, the world stood still as people from across the world witnessed one of the bloodiest and most horrific attacks on American soil by a foreign power. Images of the airplanes slamming into the World Trade Center towers, survivors trapped inside jumping to the ground below, flames rising from the wreckage of the Pentagon, and brave police and fire department workers searching the piles of debris for the remnants of their fallen comrades are ones that will forever be engraved in the minds of the courageous men and women of this beautiful country. And as the nation enters into the public debate of who is the better man to lead the United States in this tumultuous time in our history, one has to question ... Read More:

If you have seen the original "School for Scoundrels" with Terry Thomas and Ian Carmichael and you rent this film expecting it to be just as funny then you're going to be disappointed.
It's fine if you like films where wit and subtlety have been replaced by casual swearing.
Come back from the pub on a Friday night and pop this into the DVD player and you'll get a few laughs.
A talented cast tries its best with the thin script but they can only do so much.

Antony Hopkins and Nicole Kidman are just brilliant in their roles, in this movie that should be better known and regarded.
Historical racism is contrasted with what Hopkins' character refers to as 'The double dyed hyprocracy of political correctness'. Difficult decisions taken in youth cascade down the decades. I find it fascinating and thought-provoking.
I never like to give the plot away, this one unfolds believably with tragic consequences, that kept me on the edge of my seat. It's well worth checking out.

I watched this film on my new Toshiba HD-E1 HD DVD player through a Toshiba 37X3030DB 1080p HD TV last night and couldn't believe how stupid the film is. I received the film at no cost along with another HD title of my choice thanks to Toshiba's offer with the aforementioned HD DVD player.
First of all, it's just a tacky remake of The Perfect Storm (good film) which is a remake of Titanic (excellent film in my view). The plot is so lame it makes one treat it like a comedy - i was laughing most of the way through because there were flaws just about everywhere. For example, how can a drowning passenger (who's practically dead) manage to understand the engine controls of a gigantic cruise ship and then press a myriad of buttons within 5 seconds of arriving there?! It was a ... Read More:

The most predictable of last year's box-office bombs, Poseidon was always on a hiding to nothing: a remake of the much-loved but frankly not that good blockbuster that kickstarted the 70s disaster movie trend, arriving a year after a reviled TV miniseries version, showing all the signs of burning cash as it was rushed through production to meet a summer release date (it looks like it cost $80m but cost nearer twice as much despite the less than stellar cast) and coming in at a very slim 98-minutes (twelve of them credits) was always going to be facing too many negative waves. Perhaps someone at Warners should have remembered what happened the last time they boarded the Poseidon with Irwin Allen's disastrous sequel to the original, Beyond the Poseidon Adventure, which sank with all hands. Naturally, ... Read More:
