Mawkish to the point of being gruesome, each scene without exception is sunk by a tidal wave of faux sentimentality. The script is awful, the characters feeble. Utterly painful.

Absolutely stunning, usually I do not bother with seeing a film more than once, but it is such compelling viewing. The tango scene I can play over and over again, it is full of emotion and how a tango should be danced

From the first reading of Highsmith's novel I felt she was a minor genius in evoking both the mind of a deeply disturbed character and the divided society of high elegance and low misery in which he moved and from which he was alienated. Was the split in his mind or the society's? Surely both. For years Holywood seemingly "bottled" out of confronting the issue as it avoided Highsmith's most masterly opus. This film was eagerly awaited. Disappointingly the whole comes to less than the sum of its parts. The locations and period values are stunning. The direction is considered. The essence of Highsmith's novel sporadically peeps through some of the acting. Yet the final article fails to convince. Damon and Law are too unsubtle and lack the chemistry to ... Read More:

Donnie Darko is by far my favourite film. No other film reaches deep inside of me and carries me away like Donnie Darko does.
Many of my friends hate it because they "don't understand it" or "it doesn't make sense". They just don't get it though. Of course there are flaws but that is why it is one of the greatest films created in recent years. Whatever your thoughts, it makes you think.
The storyline is the most imaginative I have come across, every actor and actress is perfect for their role, every song is beautiful and the camera work is stunning.
I can think of a few words to describe Donnie Darko - dark, upsetting, thought provoking and beautiful.

As an author who's penned a number of childrens' books around submarines, and a great fan of Micheal Crichton, I rushed to see this film when it first came out and was not disappointed.
For once, the filmakers have stuck pretty much to Crichton's novel (perhaps at the expense of having to cram in too many detailed conversations explaining different aspects of the plot?)which does give the film a momentum that carries it through to the climax.
The performances from the three principal actors are excellent, particularly as their attitudes change in the cramped conditions of the underwater habitat - from indifference, through antagonism, to paranoia and finally to the realisation that they need each other to survive.
The other reviewers are right in saying that this is a classic example of Cage in comedy mode, and the spark between him and Maclaine is a joy to watch, but for me the film needed to remain as a comedy throughout. There was plenty of material to go with and when the storyline suddenly veers away from edgey humour into the darkness of a character being buried alive and held for ransom - well, the two scenarios just don't fit well together.
There are some laugh-out loud moments such as when Cage has to ring the county Sheriff to let him know that his protectee has 'gone missing' and the entire police department are listening to the embarrassment that then ensues. There is also the scene in the supermarket where the agents use their 'secret' communication systems to check on the costs ... Read More:

Don't buy this!
The packaging on the box claims this is ' unrated' - IT ISN'T!
ALL the sex scenes are missing - how the studio involved can get away with the lie on the packaging is a mystery to me, but they have!
Worthless sanitised US version, NOT the print that was released in Europe.
AVOID!!
