This is the first film version of Wuthering Heights that I've seen all the way through and I've not yet read the book. I've looked at some of the reviews on this website with interest and it seems that most people either love or loathe this film, with few views inbetween those two extremes. I have to say that, as an introduction to this famous classic, I rather liked it.
Although I haven't read the book, it is obvious that the plot has had to be condensced from novel to film so you have to make some allowances for that if you are a big fan of the book. To be fair, any film portrayal of an extensive book is going to suffer from this. However, I thought the performances were excellent and Fiennes makes a stunning Heathcliff, managing ... Read More:

This is a well-made entertaining show. Starts out with much promise but kind of runs out of steam. The character development is excellent but it is at the expense of the plot, which all but evaporates after about the third episode. Great performances pity the storyline couldn't match up.

Based on the book by their son Nigel this movie shows the story of the marriage of Vita Sackville-West, the famous novelist, poet and biographer, and Sir Harold Nicolson, diplomat and author. Vita had numerous love affaires with woman, while Harald had his male affaires. Nevertheless the couple maintained their marriage - bisexual couple share a bond of understanding and affection.
The central issue is affaire of Vita with Violet Keppel, Mrs. Denys Trefusis, the daughter of Alice Keppel, the famous mistress of King Edward VII and aunt to Camilla Parker-Bowles. It is quite an amazing story and most instructive in class terms and prejudices against homosexual love.
This has got to be one of the best movies I have ever watched, but is certainly a movie that requires and deserves to be watched by those who apreciate the fantastic story and acting. If you are looking for action movies don't look here, but if you like movies that are moving and deeply emotional then this might be a movie for you. I cried buckets at the end without the movie being predictable or "soppy" and best of all...it tells the story of real people and makes one think of those poor real characters. All acting was highly professional and to the highest standard in my oppinion, but Pryce was second to none. Highly recomended if you like myself like beautiful but deep movies.

As a Gilliam fan I was expecting far more from this but, as has been said before, this is possibly due to the original story on which the film was based. Geoff Bridges' character provides the real goodies in the first half of the film after which things do tend to drag. I was contantly expecting 'something more' to happen. That said, the film is beautifully shot and well acted and the 'fantasy' scenes are memorable when Gilliam actually gives free reign to his imagination .

A very ambitious politician is mentally hamstrung during election time as he cannot shake the memories of his true love. Over the course of his political ascension he slips from love-induced ecstasy to border-line insanity as he starts to question whether his one true love really died. As the audience, we are very cleverly dragged into this state of mind.
Connelly and Crudup's performances turn a decent script into a tremendous romance that only comes around once every few years. This movie was a lead-up to Connelly's Oscar for A Beautiful Mind and Crudup's Almost Famous.
There are some very memorable moments...seeing Crudup plead relatives for help to stave the onset of madness is both extremely uncomfortable yet astonishingly ... Read More:

This is one of the best in the fine Catherine Cookson series produced by Ray Marshall. The story is less involved than some others, but it has more than enough twists and surprises to sustain an interesting narrative. However, its key strengths are a fabulous cast, and settings, costumes and locations that realise an historical authenticity rarely bettered. It is probably unfair to single out one actor from a stellar group, but Geraldine Somerville's vivid and engaging performance as the central character Biddy is outstanding. The music in this production is also a treat.

I bought this DVD in all good faith (not knowing the details of the
script) due to the presence in the credits of one of my favourite
actresses, Janet McTeer, who was deservedly nominated for an Oscar
the year before she appeared in this. What a fall from grace, going
from the sublime comedy, 'Tumbleweeds', to 'The King Is Alive', which
plays out like an X-rated version of 'Lord Of The Flies'. I can only
infer that Janet was brought onboard on the back of her Oscar nomination
in order to give this film some credibility and bankability in the first
instance. Yet the final product is still unwatchable. Basically, a group
of (supposed) adults become stranded in a Namibian shanty town, when
the SatNav onboard ... Read More:

Another great performance from the always
wonderful Janet McTeer, for which she was
nominated for an Oscar in 2000 (only missing-
out narrowly to Hilary Swank in 'Boys Don't
Cry'). Janet's facility for accents is at the
fore, here, as she is a classically trained
British actress born in Newcastle and raised
in York, England. Yet her Southern drawl is
as good as any in Hollywood, and it amazed
reporters at the Sundance film festival to
hear her speaking 'The Queen's English' to
them in interview.
One amusing element of the story is where
Mary Jo's has to help her daughter to learn
her lines for a school production of Romeo
and Juliet. Here, Janet has to divest herself ... Read More:
