I absolutely love this show. I think another reviewer said thirtysomethings will enjoy this more and I have to agree. While Life on Mars was brilliant, a lot of the time it did seem to be nothing more than a pastiche of the brilliant Sweeney and Gene Genie nothing more than a piss-take of the legendary Jack Regan. That is not to slag it off LoM was groundbreaking and I adore John Simm and he made Sam Tyler such an empathetic character it was easy to sympathise with Sam's plight. This was a brilliant film. Totally fantastic. I cannot fault anything about it except.... that whilst the first half of the movie was action packed, funny, and sexy, the second half seemed to loose some of this excitement. It carried on being very good but I was much more on the ball with the first half. I cannot actually believe this was based on a true story. When it aired in my country in the summer of 2002 and i loved it. it was one of the best mini series i have ever watched. i don't know if it was the subject, gay romance in 19 century England, but this is to this day still in my top 5 of most see mini series. the plot, the script, the character and the acting are amazing. you can tell it is BBC made due to it's quality. i highly recommend it and If you don't want to buy try and rent it from somewhere I promise it be worth it. >>More Details

I don't know how I missed this when it came on TV back in 1998 ... but I'm sure glad I found it now. This is an extremely good adaptation of a very readable Dickens novel - if you haven't read the novel, I'd recommend it. This adaptation cleverly keeps 90% of the original story while leaving out a couple of minor characters that add interest to the novel but are not necessary. The casting, locations, storyline, everything are spot on and it is a cracking story. If you are a fan of costume drama, you really don't want to miss this one. Oh, and have a go at the book, too - but give yourself a lot of time, it's MASSIVE! >>More Details

This movie is well written, action packed with a bit of light hearted comedy to keep it from getting too heavy. This movie carries on with the tradition of Lock Stock, and a welcome return after the last few attempts. A couple of dodgy accents, but that's a very small issue. The film is in 2 parts, the first the robbery then as soon as that's done, then the action really kicks in. Being based on the book 'A Friend Like Henry by Nuala Gardner', I do advise reading this before watching the film, as the film only shows part of what Nicola and Rob went through with their son, and where the film ends, the book carries on quite a bit further, explaning the trials the family went through. The film doesn't really do justice to the book, however, it is gripping from start to finish, opens a window of what life is like for many parents in Rob and Nicola' position. Although I'm not one to compare actors in different films I always seem to compare Steve Coogan to his brilliant Alan Partridge ego and I was awfully disappointed with his contribution to this film. I am a huge fan of his normally, including the cleverly crafted '24 hour party people'. This film really lacked any humour and I found the storyline muddled. Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of classical literature and Tristram Shandy is on my to read list, but this movie just appeared to miss the vital transition from one century to the other. >>More Details

I think the title of this review sum up my opinion. The complexity of the storyline was lost in this adaptation. The facts and details that were changed, removed the edge that this novel had originally. However, God bless Brian Cox who brought talent to the uninspiring cast. The other reviewer is partially correct inasmuch as Zoe Wanamaker , Elaine Paige and Geraldine McEwan do a first class job . One must not forget that Robert Pugh is excellent in his role too ! It is impressive that they managed to do this novel in 90 or so minutes when the Joan Hickson one was a three parter if memory serve me right . This adaptation is pretty cliched as lesbianism which is hinted at in the original novel & the Joan Hickson version is much more blatant in the Geraldine McEwan adaptation . This in your face approach confirms what the intelligent reader and/or viewer could have worked out for themselves .
