Although Ken Stott is a good if sanitized Rebus, the show doesn't really take off. Format might be an issue here as 70 minutes is a fairly short period to tell a complex story. On the other hand, other shows like Blue Murder manage it. My main misgivings about the show are that the bepisodes have nothing to ndo whatsoever with the books of the same titles and that te story telling is linear. Thefre are absolutely no surprises, no twsits in the story telling: not to pu too fine a polint on it, the stories are plainly boring. That's a pity because you get some really fginde performances of the cast.

I too watched this when first screened in 1984. I have a rickety copy of it on an a home taped video, which I've watched many times. I also wrote to the BBC to see if they would release it on video and screen it again on BBC1 (it was only ever screened on BBC2) after it won the BAFTA, but no joy! 'Taking over the Assylum' is funny, moving, warm, thought provoking, full of great music and wonderful characters. The cast are all great, but if you like David Tennant you'll love this. I shall be buying multiple copies for Christmas.

Messiah 1 & 2. Such an interesting offering from the BBC and Paramount. It's really well written, well acted and well shot. The international market ensured there was a need for London buses and a few famous landmarks to denote place. One of it's failings is the communication of time/season. In the Boris Starling book (incidently the author makes an appearence as Bartholomew) there is an acute sense of seasonal change and the oppressive heat of a summer in London- it's a minor gripe. It's such a clever, taut filmic style BBC series.

In my opinion this is an excellent series. Not for those of a nervous disposition as there are some grusome scenes but these only add to the high drama of the series. All the cast play their parts with great realism with Ken Stott outstanding as the lead officer in the investigations. The plots are well conceived and leave very few clues as to each killers identity. You will need to concentrate on the action as it is fast moving with the main characters closely relating on a personal level within their professional duty.

After 4 years i finally watched this DVD right through, out of curiosity more then anything else. I admit the battle scenes were actually authentic, though perhaps a little OTT with the blood sometimes, although that was what warfare was like back then. They wanted to make a gritty and unromantic portrayal of the era and the filmmakers have succeded in doing that.
However i detected a faint whiff of liberalistic revisionism. I thought Arthur was supposed to be a christian hero, not some wishy washy pelagian.
The roles and character of the historical figures of bishops pelagius and germannus seem to have been completely inverted. Pelagius' erroneus ideas caused a lot of trouble and confusion amongst the church in britain and europe at this ... Read More:

Sometimes a bit of hard, dark and amusing period-drama is just what the doctor ordered, taking a break from BBC endless remakes of nicety-nice Jane Austin and Charles Dickens books that we all pay our licence fees for !!!
High-way man Plunkett (Carlyle) teams up with ex-socialite Macleane (Miller) to rob the London gentry of their wears, along the way becoming infamous and inciting the wrath of the local authorities.
I felt that the film was just the right mix of drama and comedy, with serious events separated by moments of shear comic genius. Macleane encouraging Plunkett to eat more prunes and trying to catch a large ruby as it worked its way through his system, along with trying to cure a dose of the clap caught in the line of duty with ... It Really is NOT necessary to be an Arsenal Fan (A Gooner) to enjoy this film - as Nick Hornby manages to capture and portray what it is like to be 'A Football Fan' (The Heaven and Hell we all go through) - Regardless of who you might or might not support - As the film portrays the Highs, Lows, Agony and Ecstasy that most (true) Football fans go through each week, Month and Season.....whether your team be a Big Club or one of the Smaller Clubs - as it is all about the Passion and Love that one holds for ones own team - As Paul The main Character in the film observes how it's possible for your team/club to lift your spirits to the point of ecstasy and then bring you crashing back down to earth the next - which is what it is like being a Football fan.....and so if you are and ... Has a lot wrong with it, mainly credibility wise, but the dialogue is sharply written and the roles are sharply played by up and coming actors who make their presence known here. Also has that edgy feel of an ambitious new wave cinema piece. Very watchable.
