I wish I hadn't watched this. I kept on because I just hoped it could deliver if I persevered but it just didn't bring out the light in contrast to the dark enough. Pessimistic and very nearly totally unrelentingly dark sided. It would have been great to have some more sincere characters to contrast with the downfall of the cynical protagonist.

This will be a review of the film and not the extras on this two disc edition which are frankly disappointing. Also,if this was a review about the DVD casing it would probably get one star.Flimsy, made of cardboard and mine already has a tear in it!
Still, the movie itself is excellent. It does seem to divide opinion with amost as many people awarding it one star as opposed to five. But for me it is worth full marks because the performance of Daniel Day-Lewis is fantastic. He is at times manic, almost sympathetic and nearly comic but it is rivetting and one of the finest performances of recent years. The character of Daniel Plainview could have very easily descended into farce, but Day-Lewis keeps things in check right to the very end.I ... This is an amazing film, with very high acting skill from Day Lewis. The acting skill of this is just under a Robert De Niro performance, I compare every actor to De Niro as he is the greatest actor of all time!
Daniel gets a 5 out of 5 for his acting, but the story of this film is not great, that is why for me it hits a 3 out of 5. There were 2 films of 2008 that were the best and that's "There will be blood" & "No country for old men" so if you are looking to get one of these in Blu ray and can't decide, then I would recommend "No country for old men". That film gets 5 out of 5 for me as the acting is amazing with an amazing story line.
But if you can get both that's even better, that's what i've done. Final note ... Read More:

A film of two halves, but with a somewhat uncomfortable join.
This movie starts off with one of the most gritty and riveting hunts in recent memory. Pierce Brosnan's weatherbeaten and hardened ex Union officer is the hunted one, and Liam Neeson is the hunter, driven remorselessly by the ghosts of his past. The cold of the mountains, the pain of using a knife to gouge out a bullet and cauterize the wound, the chill of the water, the close quarters kills with the knife, all make for a visceral start with minimal dialogue and little explanation. Each man is completely single minded - one on survival, and one on revenge. As the chase moves onto the plains, we discover more about their past and the reason for the chase, marking a change in tone of ... Read More:

I have watched this film many, many times over the years and it's still as great as the first time I watched it. A superstar cast brings with it quality acting and a superb script. Don't think I've ever watched it without crying, so if you're a Steel Magnolias virgin, or coming back to it for a repeat viewing - be sure to have the tissues at the ready....
It also has one of my all-time favourite quotes, which is something I live by...
"I'd rather have one moment of wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special" - simply beautiful!
Obviously if you like your no-brainer action car-chase movies, this isn't for you. If you want a simple story of lives and friendships, beautifully written and flawless performances, with depth and character - this is ... Read More:

I'm not a huge fan of Russell Crow (not a great way to start a review on one of his films I know!) but watching this on TV the other night has altered my opinion!
This film is a strange one, set in the future where the personalities of criminals have been merged into one Virtual reality criminal called Sid 6.7 (Russell Crow). He is used to train police officers in Virtual Reality so they can be more capable in the real world. They begin testing the programme on Criminals, one being an ex cop called Parker (Densel Washington)
However, Sid is so advanced that he is able to grow, learn and evolve. Assisted by his crazy creater, his programme is downloaded into a robot that looks completely human, but is virtual indesructable as it is able to repair itself be attaching ... Read More:

A few minutes into this I realised that it was more of a kids film. Perhaps I was expecting something at least a little bit more sinister and gripping, but that certainly wasn't the case.
This movie does have great visual effects but it seems to be rather aimed at juveniles (13 or under?) which is a big surprise considering that it's officially rated 15.
Two-thirds of the way through I ended up slightly speeding up the DVD and reading it from the subtitles. If I had kids I would maybe sit them in front of it while I did something else like mowing the lawn.
