The Baudelaire children lead a cushy life of reading books, inventing, and biting. One day at the beach Mr. Poe informs them of the unfortunate event of their house and parents burning down. They are then shuffled around to various unrelated relatives. At every turn they are perused by their uncle Count Olaf, who covets their inheritance. Trying to explain this to grownups is almost impossible.

Grate narration of the movie by Jude Law; he added a dimension that made you want to see what was happening next.

The books offer such great (terrible) resources for the movie. However it was a bit much trying to cram three books into one movie. Each book has more than enough story line for a movie. The events were taken out ... Read More:

I've never read the books, it seems that if you have and like them you're not going to like the film. But i loved the film! Funny, well acted by all (and considering i have a pathological dislike of child actors thats sayings something!) and well directed...

Great way to spend an afternoon!

directed by: Chris Columbus

This is a great plane film. You can turn in and out to it and every time Susan Sarandon will still be bravely holding it together and Julia Robers will be sweetly proving she can also be a good mom. Then at the end you'll probably cry in spite of yourself.

Keanu Reeves is Nelson Moss who has a successful career in advertising. One day, he meets a beautiful and unusual Sara Deever and gradually falls in love with her only to discover that she is dying.

I won't spoil the story for those who haven't seen it but would like to say that Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron look absolutely beautiful as a couple and deliver solid performances. Unfortunately, this still doesn't bring out either the chemistry between the two actors or much of a story. The storyline is extremely poor and never really develops into much. You keep expecting more from it but, sadly, this film never delivers.

However, if you like either Keanu Reeves, Charlize Theron or both, they are still a delight to watch. Great ... Read More:

Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events [2004]

starring: Jim Carrey, Jude Law, Meryl Streep, Liam Aiken, Emily Browning
directed by: Brad Silberling

I missed this film at the movies, and I love good kids movies.

I was not disappointed, it is mildly dark in the vein of Roald Dahl, the acting is wonderful, especially Jim Carey who is in his element, but also the guy from League of Gentlemen, and three kids (even the toddler is brilliant) and Meryl Streep. It is a childhood fantasy stocked with wondeful and imaginative scenery, props and script. I love the house clinging to the cliff and Lacrimose Lake.

I would have savoured this when I was ten (but I love it now anyway). A favourite in my collection, wonderful!

DVD : Fay Grim [2006] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

Fay Grim [2006] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

starring: Jeff Goldblum, Elina Löwensohn, Parker Posey, Chuck Montgomery, Leo Fitzpatrick
May 22, 2007

This is my first Hal Hartley film and I had no idea it was a sequel to `Henry Fool'. Parker Posey plays Fay Grim, the wife of Henry Fool. She does not seem to have her life in order. But who can blame her. Her husband is on the run or dead, her brother is in jail and her son just got expelled from school. What could be worse?

Here is where this espionage spoof film takes off on its implausible but interesting ride. A C.I.A. agent is waiting in her home for her to return. He informs her that her husband is dead, and the multi-volume diary he wrote is wanted by every government in the world. And now that they know Parker can obtain some of them, they all try to use her.

The C.I.A. convince Fay to fly to Paris to retrieve the books that are rightfully ... Read More:

The only reason why both of these movies are being bundled together is the presence of the Irish mob in them. However, as far as gangster movies go, they are both idiosyncratic on their own rights.
Unlike The Godfather or Goodfellas where the benchmark for gangsterism in films were set, both of these movies concentrates on the "grunt" level of the mob. It's ground zero. Both movies feature a protagnist caught between conflicting conscience and interests.
Miller's Crossing shows a distinctive Coen style of story telling. Gabriel Byrne shines here, and should have gotten an Oscar nomination. Road to Predition, a prohibition-era take on the Japanese series, Lone Wolf and Cub, takes American everyman, Tom Hanks, into the role of a mob hitman. The crux of the film is on ... Read More:

Let's start with the beautiful: magnificent use of the African landscape, an enchanting musical score, the touching relationship depicted by Vicent Perez and Liam Aiken.

The controversial: based on the true story of a European woman remaining in Africa despite various tragedies, it raises many important questions about the confrontation of personal project vs family that are not sufficiently approached - extremely interesting food for thought and a wonderful trigger for post-movie discussion.

The good: brilliant performances by all actors, with my special preference going to Eve Saint (remember her with Marlon Brando way back?), Liam Aiken and Daniel Craig (in a small but highly accomplished role, as usual). Perez and Basinger are good at the lead, and ... Read More:

DVD : Henry Fool [1998] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

Henry Fool [1998] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

starring: Thomas Jay Ryan, James Urbaniak, Parker Posey, Maria Porter, James Saito
directed by: Hal Hartley
December 16, 2003

One tries not to throw the word brilliant around too often, as doing so robs the word of any meaning, so I am quite sincere when I bestow the word brilliant on this remarkable film - after all, what is artistic brilliance if not the ability to call forth beauty from the midst of ugliness? This story takes place against a depressing backdrop of poverty, desperation, and dysfunction. Simon Grim (James Urbaniak) works as a garbage man, endures physical attacks on the streets, and comes home each night to a thoroughly dysfunctional family. His mother is obviously depressed and, at times, nonresponsive, while his sister Faye (Parker Posey) is irresponsible and only interested in fulfilling her own [...] needs as often as possible. Simon himself seems anti-social if not mentally challenged. ... Read More:
