Great animation, characterization, sound, and imagery rule in "101 Dalmations." It's action, excitement and love, but with a dark theme that's a bit scary.

This movie is not a bad movie. It has good performances, especially from Jack Nicholson, and a good story line. But this is one of the most over-rated movies I have ever seen.
The direction is similar to that of a TV movie, very basic and plain, and is what one would expect of any run-of-the-mill director for a major film.
The main problem I have with the movie though is that it does nothing for me- it's not particularly interesting, funny, thoughtful, or novel. The majorty of the film is a series of snapshots of a mother-daughter relationship through time, not at any point doing more than documenting "where they're at", whilst the final third of the film is a melodramatic twist that contiues in the same vein as the first part of the film, ... Breaking Away [1979] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

starring: Dennis Christopher, Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern, Jackie Earle Haley, Barbara Barrie
directed by: Peter Yates
January 29, 2002

What a completely disarmingly brilliant film. Just when you expect a lightweight rom-com along comes a delightfully witty masterpiece with real heart, great acting and wonderful dialogue. OK, it's a coming-of-age, feel-good, boy-meets-girl, college drama but it avoids most of the usual cliches and leaves some great lines and scenes indellibly etched on your memory. The plot - a quartet of old school chums (none academically gifted) have left school and are pondering their future - the prospects are stark - either university or stone masonry - as "Cutters" in the single local industry. Hero Dave is drifting and, inspired by the Italian Champion cycling team, dreams about becoming a world cycling champion when he bumps into a lovely college girl. His efforts to ... Read More:

DVD : The American Friend [1977]

The American Friend [1977]

starring: Dennis Hopper, Bruno Ganz, Lisa Kreuzer, Gérard Blain, Nicholas Ray
directed by: Wim Wenders
June 23, 2003

THE AMERICAN FRIEND is a clever film, but one that perhaps suffers from a being a little too smart for its own good. As an exploration of the cultural colonisation of Germany it is very effective, and WIM WENDERS fills the subtext of his film with a pessimistic tone that borders on paranoia, a redolent theme for a film of the 1970's. He depicts a featureless and grey Europe that is bending under the unbearable yolk of capitalism. A continent that has had its originality squeezed out of it by the duplicitous behaviour of people like Tom Ripley. A land of commerce and greed, rather than art. In fact art becomes the metaphorical device for the insidiousness of a consumer driven society, with both painting and the cinema acting as its agents. Of all European countries to ... Read More:

directed by: Lisa Niemi

This is an OK movie. I admit that I was not expecting much but even then I was disapointed. The story is fine...the acting is fine...the dancing is very fine...but that's as far as it goes...just, fine all the way around, and I mean fine as "OK", not "rare, precious, fantastic"...

Ok, a look at the synopsis suggests you're not in for a bunch of laughs watching this film, but still....

There is some fine acting and writing in this, but you end up just longing for the film to end. The film is very obviously set in today's England, and filmed very naturalistically. Also, the story of a mother dying, and the grief of her bereaved daughters, is one which should touch a chord with many viewers.

But it's just hard to feel involved or care, and the story just meanders.

Completely lacking in warmth and sensuality.Actors all seem uncomfortable in their bodies and with any scenes of intimacy. The worst gay film we've watched so far.Don't bother, theres far better.
