I saw this movie back in 1988 (it was released that year). And I tell you, if it was the first anime movie you've seen as a child, it will stay with you, after almost twenty years it remains one of the best anime movies ever. it has a plot, good story and the typical war between good and evil.
Replaying to the first reviwer: If you really knew the facts, you wouldn't have said that it was a Star Wars rip off, simply because Doc E. E. Smith wrote the Lensman novels in the 1930's and on, I tell you that George Lucas was the one who stole the ideas from the Lensman.
Finally the movie was dubbed more than once to english, the first time was in 1988 by Harmony Gold (this is the best version I've seen) its not that popular simply because not that many ... Read More:

i wasn't that keen on the appleseed one,it didn't really go anywhere, and it was somewhat predictable,i didn't like the style ether. But battle angel, what a film. i wanted to get the film before i red the books and the best way to describe it is wow, the amimation is fantastic and i love the style,(slight hatching on face) its great and of course the story is riddled with emotional content that makes you think about it for days after you have watched it.It gets five stars for the battle angel alita, + its a good price seen as you get two animations on the video.

First off... Brilliant series, I can not praise it highly enough.
I only have one gripe with this box set, and it's a big one. The review here claiming 5.1 dolby surround is false, I dont know if they reviewer had a crossed wire or something, But these disks are Dolby Digital 2.0. This Does not have 5.1 or DTS support! The 5.1 is on the new soon to be released disks in feb, 'The Platinum Collection'.
Anyway, that was a huge kick in the balls for me... And I just wanted you warn you, to good customers, of this little 'mistake' in the Amazon review. Once again, top class, fantastic, beautiful and great anime though.

First, the obligatory character bios: Ars猫ne Lupin III: Think James Bond meets Inspector Gadget. Cool, crazy, and carefree, he's never caught for long.
Jigen Daisuke: A near perfect marksman and a superb driver of getaway vehicles (ever notice how he never crashes, unlike the people chasing him?)
Ishigawa Goemon: The stoic samurai show his softer side in this film. For those of you who wonder why he hangs out with people so unlike himself, as far as I know, he's vowed that if Lupin is going to die, he must be the one to kill him. So basically, he's insuring that Lupin doesn't die in the meantime.
Fujiko Mine: Lupin's sometime girlfriend. Sort of a token female and source of much fan service.
