I'll never understand why this film walked away with all the awards it got and was so hyped. PULP FICTION does not live up to any such expectations. Supposedly cool it is just senseless banter most of the time, not really funny but utterly ridiculous, with sudden explosions of violence. If you're looking for a black comedy try THURSDAY - a supposed copy of the Tarantino-style, but far better than anything he made.

Saw this at the flicks back in '95 - didnt like it then, bought the DVD (mainly on the say so of the wife), don't like it now.

OK it looks great, OK it's got the usual Tarantino 'pop culture' references script, yes its got good performances in it (not you Quentin, I'm talking Sam Jackson), yes it's probably one of the most stylish films of the 90's.........

BUT

It's also one of the most overly self-indulgent, over-long, plagiaristic and flabby films ever commited to celluloid.

On top of that it also manages to prove just how pointless and useless Bruce Willis really is and includes several scenes which bored me to tears (I dont care what anyone else says, the Jack Rabbit Slim sequence is dull, ... Read More:

This is a movie for girls - guys steer clear, unless you want to fast-forward to the lesbian scenes, which are very nice, and which are the only reason to give the film two stars instead of one. Otherwise leave it to the girls!

This film tells the story of a 23 year old woman, who lives with her partner and two young children in a trailer in her mother's back yard. Needless to say, they are a very poor family, and she spends her nights working as a cleaner to help put food on the table.

When she is diagnosed with cancer and given two months to live, she draws up a list of things to do before she dies. At this point, the film looks like it will simply be a version of the bucket list. But not so. After drawing up the list, she decides she will keep her illness a secret. She then sets out to do the items on her list, from sleeping with other men to see what its like, to attempting to set her soon to be bereaved husband up with a pretty female friend of hers.

I see that other reviewers have been more affected by this movie than me. Don't get me wrong, I loved it but in my opinion it's basically a visual comedy. The characters are sometimes sad, even pathetic, but they are caricatures rather than fully fleshed people and as such genuine sympathy for them is muted.

The silent movie imagery is typical of Guy Maddin and is brilliantly done.

The glass legs full of beer is an inspired surreal idea and, to me, just plain funny (if a little twisted).

The brothers and their father are really the main characters on which the plot hangs, providing some great visual comedy as well as some over the top pathos, but the female characters often steal the show. Isabella Rossellina as the bar owner and Maria ... Read More:

A simple tale of the pitfalls of the male ego.

Unfortunately Golden Balls suffers from a fairly weak script and plot, although strangely these weaknesses are less of a problem than I would normally expect. In a way they almost seem deliberate as they mirror the weakness of the central character and machismo in general.

Some good performances from a quality cast help to paper over the cracks and make this movie good fun and quite watchable but I wouldn't rush to stick it in the DVD player too often.
