I was introduced to the director of this film (Guillermo del Toro) by a friend who told me to watch "The Orphanage". I bought it and was more than a little perturbed to see it was all in Spanish!! I couldn't see myself watching a foreign language film like some haughty-taughty art critic, so nearly returned it before watching it...
HOW GLAD I DID NOT! "The Orphanage" happens to now be one of my favourite films of all time, and a real two-finger salute to all these tacky gore fest horror movies spilling out of hollywoodland at the moment.
Any way, to the point (I know this isn't a review on the Orphanage!), because I liked that film so much, I decided to get Pan's Labyrinth since I enjoyed the directing style and the ... Read More:

Having heard how good this film was, I decided to watch it. I have to say it was dissappointing compared to other highly rated foreign films. In fact, I can't see anything to recommend it. The sheer sordidness of it left me feeling dirty. I kept expecting something interesting to happen, but no. Now that I think of it, the person who recommended it to me was not the kind of person I would have thought would appreciate a good film anyway.

Unfortunately Golden Balls suffers from a fairly weak script and plot, although strangely these weaknesses are less of a problem than I would normally expect. In a way they almost seem deliberate as they mirror the weakness of the central character and machismo in general.
Some good performances from a quality cast help to paper over the cracks and make this movie good fun and quite watchable but I wouldn't rush to stick it in the DVD player too often.
