First, there's no question the absolute star of this movie is Marion Cotillard. She delivers a blistering performance more than worthy of the Oscar. The support actors and actresses too all play their part with conviction and honesty.
So why only one star?
The edit, the direction. But mostly the edit of the screenplay. This film jumps about across timeframes in a completely random way. So much so that it leaves the viewer wondering exactly what timeframe we are watching. Are we in 1925 or is this now 1959 and then, oh wait a moment, we're back in 1940.
It attempts to stell Piaf's remarkable story via a series of fleashbacks and flashforwards but the insubstantial direction and editing makes it hard ... Read More:

This film is completely crass and completely predictable. Dreadful script and even worse acting.
I actually had to turn it off halfway through. Just glad I didn't buy it!

It turns all around the father and his son and their difficult relation. It was perfect as long as the son believed in the stories the father was telling him all the time, that is to say as long as Father Christmas really was a childhood hero. But older age came and those stories sounded all silly, even sillier and sillier and they led to a complete break between the two, the father and the son, till the father came to the point of departing from this life. The son and his wife came back and he was confronted to the stories again. But one day when he was sorting out some old documents of his father's for his mother he came across a strange deed that showed the existence of an estate under the name of his father. And he went there and discovered that this estate ... Read More:

It doesn't really matter what format you watch this on as the film will always shine through as a classic. A great cast, that do a superb job of telling a fantastic story directed by the brilliant Tim Burton. If you have not seen this film before don't think twice about purchasing it.

I would agree with the last reviewer that Taxi 2 is definately the better of the two (three!)films, but it's worth watching this one too. As a student of french i find it hard to find a lot of non-depressing french films, and practically impossible to find one that my non french speaking friends want to watch with me, but this goes down a real treat. My friends all love it, and the humour while very french is fantastic for all. Refreshing.

Hollywood certainly does not, testament to this would be the 2004 hideous rehash involving Queen Latifa and some Swedish orientated girls performing the heist. The reason why the remake is so damned awful, is that Americans do not understand the subtlties of European humour, failing to realise that slap stick and obvious ploys to get women dressed in next to nothing do not work, nor does the ebonical slang that haunts many a film, spoken from stereotypical aggressive blacks.
Anywho...I don't own many comedy films in the film collection, often the formula is repetitive, and certain films can only be endured a handful of times before coming tiresome, and placed in the back of ones collection to gather dust, to be left there until the time comes when DVD's ... Read More:
