Sidney Lumet has made a lot of really good films - 'Fail Safe', 'Twelve Angry Men' - and lot of really not so great - 'Family Business', 'Q & A'.
Before the Devil knows You're dead is in the latter category, but near the top. It's a credit to the guy (and the film's underwriters) that an 83-year-old can make a picture like this, but it is inescapable that matters of tone went a bit awry.
I think Phillip Seymour Hoffman is great, but - in this - he feels a bit miscast. From the opening, graphic shot of him going at it with Marisa Tomei, it all feels wrong. He's not adonis and she - frankly - is stunning. My first thought was that this was a commercial transaction. Later on, he's visiting a transvestite. Is that for ... Read More:

Two friends, Stan and Billy, take a road trip down south but run into trouble when they are mistakenly arrested for murder in Alabama. The hapless youngsters have no money to hire an attorney but Billy's cousin Vinny (Joe Pesci) is a lawyer so they call on him to help. What they don't realise is that Vinny took 6 attempts to pass his legal exams and, what's more, has no courtroom experience to speak of. What follows is none stop humour and 'laugh aloud' moments as the brash New Yorker sweeps into the hick town accompanied by his strident girlfriend, Mona Lisa Vito (Marisa Tomei). Vinny's lack of court etiquette, such as dressing in leathers and arriving late, quickly upsets the traditionalist judge, played by a brilliantly dry Fred Gwynne. The judge ... Read More:

I absolutely love Sandler and Nickolson but when they work together they make a fantastic double act!
I have never laughed so much in my life as I did during some of the scenes in this film. It is very well written with some hysterical moments of pure comedy.
I recommend this to any Sandler fan, it is an enjoyable watch wit some witty characters.

This is a beautiful modern love story which has combinations of both 'unsettling' moments cleverly mixed with the innocence of love in its purest form.
A young woman who has no luck in love is about to give up when she discovers a rather 'strange' young man is responsible for saving her from being raped by two rowdy customers who come into the Diner where she works.
This is one of the most beautiful love stories ever brought to the screen, and does a marvellous job at showing both the worst and the best in men.
Romantic comedy in which Mel Gibson stars as a chauvinistic advertising executive who one day after a freak accident finds that he can hear women's thoughts, and uses this to his advantage, not least of all in the workplace. An intriguing premise that makes a lot of its comic potential but I felt that more could have been done with the idea and the ending is a big let-down. Could and should be better.

Lumet's melodrama is a story of a heist gone bad, planned by two brothers (desperate for the money for differing reasons)on their parents jewellery store and the subsequent effects that it has on the family and others as events spiral out of control. Seymour-Hoffmann produces yet another outstanding performance as the elder sibling, ably supported by Hawke, Tomesei and Finney. The film, whose plot timeline shifts as the story is pieced together in a splendid fashion, has an almost 'Coenesque' feel about it and is maybe not what you would expect from the director of classics such as 12 Angry Men, Serpico and Network.
The film was shot using HD cameras so not surprisingly the cinematography on this 16:9 blu-ray transfer looks great and the films attractive score is rendered ... Read More:
