DVD : Star Wars - The Original Trilogy [1977]

Star Wars - The Original Trilogy [1977]

starring: Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Alec Guinness, Ian McDiarmid
directed by: George Lucas, Irvin Kershner, Richard Marquand
October 06, 2008

I just want to provide a bit of information that is missing from the product listing, which is of great interest to many people. That is, has the transfer of the Theatrical Editions been improved over the insult that was released last time? And the answer is a plain and simple "no". The Special Edition is the same fantastic transfer as we've had before (albeit with the same bizarre discolouration problems) and the Original Theatrical Editions are still not anamorphic. Why? Well, we all have our suspicions about that.

Putting it simply, if you don't have the Star Wars trilogy on DVD, this release is cheap enough and worth getting, but if you own it and were hoping for an improvement over the previous release (no longer limited, it ... Read More:

This review is based on watching the "original theatrical version" (1977) which is on the Bonus Disc in this 2 Disc DVD.

There is stellar charm from C3PO, R2D2, Princess Leia, Skywalker, and Hans Solo. The pace of the film is also very good. The audience follows the story much through the eyes of narrators C3PO and R2D2. That, ladies and gentleman, is why this film is pretty innovative.

Star Wars doesn't really become truly galactic until Empire Strikes Back.

'The Empire Strikes Back', the second of the "old" Star Wars releases, is likely to be the darker of the collection, yet at the same time, the most accomplished in terms events. Their are many well shot scenes that are so cleverly edited, and the early fight scene on the snow planet between the rebels and the empire is superbly shot.

It's only my opinion though, but I've always felt the ending shot of this film is incredibly weak. Not longer after Darth Vader has confessed his relationship with Luke, we're still in alot of tension and the atmosphere is quite mellow, yet in a matter of minutes, all this is turned around so we can have a shot of Luke, Leia, and the droids gazing out of their cruisers window with a big smile on their face, just to ... I watched this for the first time in a friends house on an ancient Beta video player in 1985. I enjoyed it and having watched it again recently for the first time in an attempt to understand why alot of grown men love Star Wars i was disappointed and mystified.

Is it any good? No. R O T J was the Star Wars film which thrilled me most as a child. I loved the ewoks, though now I find them to be a bit irritating and pointless in terms of plot. I loved the scenes in Jabba's palace, though now I think the use of Jim Henson's Creature Workshop was a bit over the top. I loved and still love the fast paced action sequences and the climactic lightsaber duel at the end.

All this to say I don't think Return Of The Jedi is worth watching ... Read More:

They talk about it being 2.5 hours, but bear in mind that you'll be seeing only one 25 minute show of admittedly very fun Star Wars parody. The rest comprises extras like deleted scenes and voice overs, and unrelated extra episodes which have so many strictly US pop cultural references and require so much in-depth knowledge of comic books they could have been about ostrich farming in the Carpathians, as far as I was concerned.

You could say I'm a veteran of war movies and amongst my favourites are (in no particular order) Cross of Iron, Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers Box Set and Stalingrad. If you haven't seen any of these movies yet, watch them before you even think of seeing The Big Red One.

With Lee Marvin in the title role, The Big Red One sounds promising on the box, but unfortunately it gets caught in no man's land.

As at least one other reviewer has noted here, the action sequences are a throwback to the war movies of the 60s and early 70s. Grenades appear to fall short of their target, yet German soldiers still drop like flies. In fact most of the explosions are like cheap fireworks - decidedly wimpy. Unlike Saving Private Ryan, blood and guts ... Read More:

It's a rare thing for an animated movie to surpass the live action attempts, but Batman has torn it's way through many different medias oer the years (from his first appearance in the comic books, right up until the live action movies of today), but this movie has to be seen to be believed. For those who want me to compare it to the dark knight, I would always choose this movie over the dark knight (but i maybe bias in the fact that this was a favourite childhood movie of mine), but they are two completely different approaches. If you haven't seen this yet, i would emplore you to buy it and try for yourselves, as this is a masterpiece in modern story-telling.

The animated series is work of genius. Or genius's. Lovingly crafted, beautifully written and establishes itself quickly as the best depiction of Batman outside the comics.
These are some of the earliest episodes, and arguably some of the weakest. The Last Laugh is a especially bad compared with later Joker episodes and the animated movies. "Nothing to Fear" is one of my favourites and you'll notice that the Begins movie (in regards to the Scarecrow) lifts a lot of material from here. Pretty Poison, and on Leather Wings are also classy episodes which stand up against the repeatng viewing. On the whole a short but sweet disc.
The DVD extras offer a brief but insightful intro. into each episode.

Nothing polarises people like Star Wars. For many of us, it was a fundamental part of growing up. We watched the films, we fell in love with the universe of Star Wars, we bought the toys. Star Wars is, in many ways, part of our childhood. And being so universally loved makes it difficult to take a step back and review it objectively. Star Wars is either something you love, or don't care about, and there's little middle ground.

So how does one review something that means so much to you dispassionately? With difficulty. Difficult to see, dispassionately this is.

So what are these films? They're not the same way you remember them.

This is classic film-making : the type of film-making that changed the shape of films and filmgoing. Despite being ... Read More:
