Babylon A.D. [Blu-ray] [2008]

starring: Michelle Khan, Charlotte Rampling, Mark Strong, Vin Diesel, Gerard Depardieu
directed by: Mathieu Kassovitz
December 29, 2008

I had really looked forward to this movie on Blue Ray having seen the trailers. However, after 15 minutes t was obvious that this film
was bad - very bad! The locations in supposedly Eastern Europe were poor and the initial scenes were farcical. The dialogue was laughable and Vin Diesal was just plainly poor. The underlying religious theme was ridiculous and even Charlotte Rampling couldnt lift the credibility stakes. The second half of the movie ( set in New York) was marginally better than the first half but even this was illogical and mismatched. What could have been a good film turned out to be a mess!

I'm not an overly demanding movie buff. I watch all sorts, and in general I see the merits in even the poorest movies.
I have never felt so compelled to write a review about a movie as I am now.
I'm a Vin Diesel fan. Most of his movies are watchable, and some, such as Pitch Black, are excellent. He's the stereotypical tough guy in a leading role, but he can also act. It's quite novel, and usually means his movies are good fun.
With this in mind, I sat down to watch this movie, despite never having heard of it before.

To put it bluntly, this movie is rubbish.

Some of the ideas behind it are not too bad. The future society imagined as the backdrop for the movie is good. The special effects are not bad. ... Read More:

Garbage! The film was beset with many, many problems right from the word go and does not do the director any justice what so ever. The initial reviewer covers all the bases with the problems which helped cripple this picture although casting Vin Diesel didn't help either. The first 30 minutes of the film are probably the best thing about the film (apart from the end credits!) before the characters make their trek to America. The action scenes are sub-standard, the characters are one dimensional and rather bland. I also found the amount of animal cruelty rather distasteful (dead polar bears, hanging dogs etc) but that's a minor gripe compared to the bigger picture. Futuristic New York looks awful with bright neon lights everywhere and the whole ... Read More:

I thought this was a brilliant film, very moving and non-sensational. The performance Cate Blanchett gives is outstanding, and the film tells the story of a brave journalist very well. I also thought it covered a lot of interesting issues and I would strongly recommend it.

The league of gentlemen is a comedy show that delves into sketches but all is interlinked in the town of royston vasey and nearly all the parts are played by the cast of three talented lads, the show is dark in theme and runs along a narrative of sorts.
The show for me is mixed, some scenes are very funny and are borderline genius,i really mean that, then there are scenes that drag and arent that good, some of the characters are also a bit lame no matter what they do such as the two friends who spend time in a video store, the scene with the cave guide seems to last forever and is very poor indeed.
There is much to celebrate at the same time but the inclusion of some dross gives the show a jumbled feel,i havent seen season 2 but im hoping it builds on the ... Read More:

This DVD is the the League at their very best. Elegant plotting, subtle acting and pacy editting means there is little flab to the 3 stories. Arguably series 3 is a slight dissapointment and even the second series isn't entirely successful but this seasonal offering is great. Charlie & Stella's sub plot is funny and has a genuinely scary twist; Her Lipp handles his part magnificently (well he would ... woudn't he ?) and Dr Chinnery's tale is a lesson to be careful about working with animals. Quite simply it is perfect - no flat jokes, no bad acting. It's just a shame that since then their output has dried up. (Series 3 takes itsself WAY too seriously and their movie and live dvds are good but not great.

It has the best selection of extras of any TV ... Read More:

series 3 of the show moves away from the sketch like feel of the show and is more concentrated on certain characters, this works well on some levels while at the same time suffocates itself,in particular if you dont like one of the characters for example.
This series is again dark and funny in places but doesnt keep the quality flowing, not as good as series 2 but tidies itself up nicely when you reflect back on it.
