'The Big Lebowski' has been dubbed a 'cult' movie and with reason. It is a movie for a very specific clientele and one that is likely to disappoint a more mainstream audience. First of all, it is not THAT funny. It definitely has its good moments thank to the script and the more than able cast. But don't be fooled: those moments are the exception and not the norm. The movie seems to be too pleased with itself and it certainly falls short of the comic brilliance of 'Fargo'. The storyline is never plausible and after a while one fails to be even mildly interested with all the twists and turns of its kinky plot. SPOILERS CONTAINED IN THIS REVIEW Ashley Judd is the queen of interesting high concept stories that are rendered bland and toothless. Double Jeopardy should have been one of the greatest movies ever made, but it was a boring dud because it shied away from the moral darkness of the story. The same thing has happened to this film in my opinion. The movie starts pretty poorly. It feels fake and contrived. I just got the feeling that it wasn't clicking, wasn't working. Then the plot kicks in and it was quite interesting. It was more of a psychological drama than I expected as the lead character keeps blacking out, to then have to investigate murders the next day of men she had recently slept with. The cut aways to passages from the book, narrated by Carrey, look particularly great. But as the twist in the story is set up, the film moves quickly from great, to average and finally leaves you feeling disappointed.
