This movie will make you laugh and even make you cry.But the first 30 minutes are a bit of a bore and the dialogue a bit plain and uninteresting. However its worth seeing for the last hour or so.The chemistry between Brittany Murphy and Dakota Fanning is good - and the main reason to watch the film.

Pleasantville is an example of creative movie making ripe for hijacking by those with issues to grind.
Director Gary Ross samples social issues and cliches to illuminate this tale in a similar fashion to how historical footage was used in Forrest Gump.
Whatever your preconception of the 50's America ideal is...you'll find it woven in here.
If I studied it in any great depth, i imagine the characters illustrate our vulnerability when society engenders institutionalised thinking. Particulaly the negative aspects of institutionalised thinking.
Anyway, a hugely enjoyable, creative and memorable movie. A great credit to Gary Ross and all those involved.

On Wednesday, I visited my "adopted" sister and her three children. As soon as I walked through the door, I could smell the distinct odour of illness: not only was my "sister" ill with what we thought was food-poisoning, so were her three children and her mother-in-law, who were also in the house at the time. Needless to say, the food-poisoning turned out to be a stomach bug, and I spent Thursday in bed, and not at work. Bored rigid, I dragged out and dusted off some of my old VHS (having already attempted to watch two DVD's and start a book) and decided to have a "slasher" day. With hindsight, I am glad that I did - from the trilogy of video's that I did watch, "Valentine" was by far the best: I had, quite simply, forgotten how good it is.
I watched this film last night with my two sons and we all thoroughly enjoyed it, laughing out loud at regular intervals.
It revolves around Jimmy, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, who was born without any immune system, brought home by his mother from hospital and kept in a large plastic bubble for his own protection. When the film opens he appears to be a normal well-adjusted teenager, playing guitar and larking around. However, he has been dubiously home-schooled by his religeously fanatical mother who fills his head with all manner of strange and warped information about other cultures and, most particularly, girls. As he has never left his bubble, and his father never seems to speak, he has no other point of view to disprove his mother so is in blissful ... Read More:

I think the previous reviewer may be somewhat misinformed. Yes, the film has heavy intentional damage marks but it also was purposely meant to look grainy - film grain - not digital noise. I'd like to see the film as close to the filmmakers visual intent as possible. Blu-ray is so superior over DVD it's not even funny. I own this and have reviewed it with images on my website. The only way to see this is on Blu-ray... or theatrically.

i am a huge fan of the "from dusk till dawn" movies, tarantino & rodriguez
are an amazing talent of directors.this film look liked a sort of "dawn of the dead" meets "from dusk till dawn".dont get me wrong this film is full of action, horror & gore but the annoying "superimposed" scratches & frame skips got on my nerves. i know the director was trying to recreate the coolness of an old grindhouse movie but why not have 2 versions on the
dvd,1 version of the film with the scratches & frame skips,2 the version
without.its a backward step,we spend all this time remastering movies on dvd only to try to replicate an old grindhouse classic ? you decide.....

When I first saw this film nearly ten years ago, I wasn't familiar with any of its cast (excepting Peter Ustinov of course), but I had been drawn to a very funny clip I saw where the lead male character was being chased and hunted down by what looked liked literally hundreds of women - dressed as brides, and this looked extremely funny. This stuck in my mind, and I thought this might be fun to see and so I bought the Video!
This movie is a little slow in getting going, and the intro. is not that good - perhaps even a bit too silly to be funny, but I would suggest 'sticking with it' as there are some really funny scenes in this, and as previously mentioned; the scene with the hoards of brides is absolutely hilarious! The best scene by far though, being the wedding ... Read More:
