...is surely, if there is no God, can people do good for any other reason? Or are we destined to sink into self-centred anarchy or subservience to the system?
While the TV News encourages us to answer negatively, this beautiful film offers us the tiniest sliver of hope.
It doesn't spoil the plot to say that the film portrays how a faithful servant of the East German Communist 'machine' is opened up to beauty, art and love, and the possibility that helping others to his own detriment may be the most human thing he can ever do.
That the film's story echoes in the real life of its star only adds to the depths of his portrayal of a man choosing to be free to do good.
To say this film was `graphic' would not do it justice as it is rare to watch scenes where the sense of bullets ricocheting off walls and wood splintering with each shot sounds and looks realistic. There is no glorification of the RAF (Red Army Faction) in this film as they were portrayed as murderers of a ruthless sort with apparently many reasons to fight and protest but sadly, none of the causes seemed blindingly obvious nor obtainable. Baader himself is portrayed as a 70s version of an utter detestable hooligan with a gun while Meinhof is a pitiful character who seemed to lose her way although she seemed ... Read More:

This movie is interesting for those fascinated by Houellebecq's written masterpiece. However, it all too quickly skipped over the key part at the end of the novel. Micheal is relegated to the minor part here, with Bruno having the lead role. Hence, the sex angle is overplayed (as you'd expect). Something of a missed opportunity here.

Some reviewers have complained of lack of action and a dull main character; of a man with no obvious feelings, dedicated only to secrecy in the service of `The Company'. If you want gung-ho, bullet dodging heroes, then Tom Clancy and Harrison Ford are the guys for you. If you want to know where the men who are now running the USA (and hence the world) originated, and how they took a stranglehold on power, then watch this film. It is an intelligent account of the early days of the CIA: an extension of a rich old boy's network that may have begun with honourable intentions, but soon became a cabal, protecting vested interests, and now views its purpose solely to nurture the interests of one percent of one country's citizens, at the expense of just about everyone else on the planet. If that ... Read More:
