Am I really the only member of the general public who can see Rob Brydon for what he really is? (i.e. the poor man's Steve Coogan - just as Keith Barrett is the poor man's Alan Partridge). I mean, come on, the man can’t even have his ideas - he has to copy!

I mean sure, during a 30 minute episode of any show featuring Brydon I'll manage to force out a laugh or two (if I'm very lucky & feeling generous! - hence the second star), but basically he just isn’t funny.

It’s a real shame that Steve Coogan is doing very little television these days, especially when he’s being replaced with non-entities like Rob Brydon. These are really sad, sorry days for British television when this ... Read More:

The Duchess of Duke Street is excellent and very entertaining. It has everything, rags to riches, romance, tragedy and humour. If you like period drama, you will be glued to this. It is extremely witty, charming and brilliantly acted. Gemma Jones is superb as are the supporting cast with lots of cameos you will recognise. My friends never stop borrowing it and all have loved it. An absolute must see.

DVD : Brassed Off [1996]

Brassed Off [1996]

starring: Pete Postlethwaite, Tara Fitzgerald, Ewan McGregor, Stephen Tompkinson, Jim Carter
directed by: Mark Herman
September 10, 2001

Channel Four developed Brassed Off and The Full Monty at the same time. A man called David Aukin, I think had to decide which to make. He could only choose one, so he chose Brassed Off.

Although The Full Monty is an excellent film he made the right choice as Brassed Off is more complex with a greater insight into the problems facing "old" industries in the 1990's in Yorkshire.

Well done Mr Aukin and everyone who worked on this brilliant film.

I enjoyed seeing, for the first time in over 30 years, the four discs in Volume One of this series. Now the second volume is out. The same strengths and weaknesses I noted in my review of Volume One apply: a fairly realistic court and cast (I am a barrister myself; and "Mr Justice Bragge" is the spitting image of a judge, albeit a Circuit judge and not a High Court or "Red Judge", in front of whom I have appeared myself a number of times in the West Country!), the interesting innovation of having the empannelled jury of extras actually decide the case, rather than have the ending scripted, a variety of crimes tried. The weaknesses mostly relate to the law laid down in the summing up, the amount of laxity in leading witnesses permitted and the fact that matters ... Read More:

The Duchess Of Duke Street - Series 1 - Part 1 [1976]

starring: Gemma Jones, Victoria Plucknett, John Welsh, John Cater, Richard Vernon
December 28, 1994

Anyone who missed Gemma Jones' towering portrayal of Louisa has no excuse not to catch up now! The series is based on the true life story of Rosa Lewis and the Cavendish Hotel, and is fascinating in its portrayal of the struggles and triumphs of a working class girl as talent, luck and hard work take her to the top of Society. Anyone who enjoyed Upstairs, Downstairs can't fail to be hooked by this. Watch out for a recurring guest role for Eastenders' June Brown (Dot Cotton). It's a great story, beautifully written and directed, with faultless performances throughout.

I enjoyed the series when I was on TV, and watching it again is a real pleasure. There is a timeless quality about the performance that has not diminshed with the years.
