We absolutely love this film, and it has to be watched every year just before Christmas. It's an absolute classic. I remember reading once that there was a royalties or licence problem, which complicates re-showing. Not sure if it's true, but copies are rare. A DVD version was released in America in 2007, but I've had a job to find one. I've tried a few times from internet auction sites, and every one of the DVDs I bought was a copy of the VHS tape, so be careful when buying. A note to parents, In one scene about 30 mins into the film, Bernard explains Christmas to Josephus. For those interested in the background to the All-Stars and Buena Vista musicians, the first section is essential viewing. The Compay Segundo section is a little 2nd best perhaps because he is in a slightly different musical category to the others. Melvin Bragg's commentary is very informative and typical of a South bank Show programme. The musical extracts demonstrate the exuberance of the music and it's worth buying the DVD for these alone. >>More Details

I bought this on DVD even though I already had it on video and the contrast was amazing - it is so clear and the colour is exceptional. But it is the story itelf which is so remarkable and for anyone who is interested in Dame Kiri te Kanawa and her life story (and many, many people are) it is a chronicle of strength of purpose, determination and courage. Dame Kiri is interviewed very sensitively and well by Melvyn Bragg and she answers questions honestly.
