If you are looking for a laugh a minute Sellers film, look elsewhere.
This instead is a masterpiece of acting and directional mood.
The story can be taken as a pre-Forest Gump tale of a lovable simpleton saying the right thing and being in the right place at just the right time, subtly woven into this are moments of spiritual allegory (surprisingly well handled, the film for me is chock full of images and dialogue that push this almost subliminal side of the story, up to the very last image and spoken words which are just this side of over-done. So subtle is this aspect of the film that at times I may just be seeing shapes in the clouds, another level to the genius of this film). Or just revel in the very real and raw performances ... This is a truly excellent film, unlike the lammentable so called remake 'The money pit', it has a very well observed and funny script, style, pace, characterization, and Cary Grant, of course. This film seems to have been ignored of late so count it as a lost classic and find it if you haven't already seen it.

A rich brat (Freddy Bartholomew) is dysfunctional due to his environment. There is always Sheryl Temple type stories of some kid being orphaned and mistreated. Luckily this is not one of those movies. Everyone except the kid has a full understanding of the problem and good solutions. The school authorities say that he has good potential, His father takes a direct interest and it was just unforeseen circumstances that changed his life. He falls off the ship and is rescued by a fisherman. He must stay on board for the duration of the season. This makes a natural environment to learn bonding and character.
It is not the outcome, but the process, which intrigues us and some unforgettable acting by Spencer Tracy.
I had waited so long to watch a really good and scary Polanski film, and was trying to decide which one to choose, aware of course that at some time or another I would have watched them all anyway, but I wanted this one that I saw to be the one that made me either love or hate his work. And watching this has not answered my question. I was confused and concerned through the majority of this film because I could not understand the peculiarity of the plot. This could be the work of genius which (being that I am not fully developed in good directors' work) could baffle me and make me feel that the work isn't good. But it could also be a mediocre film. I watched Rosemary's Baby and did not enjoy it at all, I found the plot and acting weak and I fear I am ... Read More:

What a great and weird film...scary, funny, unsettling, sophisticated. And the Femm family..."They were all godless here. They used to bring their women here - brazen, lolling creatures in silks and satins. They filled the house with laughter and sin, laughter and sin. And if I ever went down among them, my own father and brothers - they would tell me to go away and pray, and I prayed - and left them with their lustful red and white women." "The fact is, Morgan is an uncivilized brute. Sometimes he drinks heavily. A night like this will set him going and once he's drunk he's rather dangerous." "Have a potato?" Ernest Thesiger as Horace Femm is a movie unto himself. The film stars one of my favorite actors, Melvyn Douglas, as a skeptical, somewhat disallusioned ... Read More:

What a good film! Paul Newman is a fantastic actor and really captures the attention of the viewer as the moody Hud in this beautifully shot movie. Although I am generally adverse to watching films over two hours because I tend to fall asleep I was wide awake through the whole duration of this! Newman has the ability to fit any role he encounters which adds to the brilliance.
