With a central performance by Alistair Sim that is nothing short of brilliant this movie deserved to be restored to its original condition for DVD but wasn't. I have not seen any prior reviews that commented on the crappy quality of this print but crappy it is, sadly.
Cut to fit the TV screen, it is a poor quality print. No subtitles. No closing credits. A lack of sharpness and definition to the picture and sound. The "extras" are not worth bothering with. Disappointing is what it is.
Kathleen Harrison is superb as is the supporting cast of British film luminaries. They and Alistair deserved better. Cheap and looks it.
The quality of the film's transferance onto DVD is poor and the dubbing in particular is suspect, but this film is undoubtedly a classic. It's apparently the earliest example of a 'portmanteau' horror film(,a film which narrates a series of separate tales). Here, an architect visits a country house and tells the guests of a recurring nightmare he's had about the house and the inhabitants, prompting them to relate a series of supernatural experiences, the creepiest of which is the last one, involving a ventriloquist (Michael Redgrave) and a seemingly independent dummy. When the tales have been related, there is an horrific climax and a disturbing twist: the protagonist seems to be stuck in a nightmarish 'groundhog day' scenario.

A wonderfully realised cine-tale of Herman Melville's timeless book of revenge and ambition. On the surface this is a marvellous tale of adventure upon the high seas. An insight into the 19th-century trade of whaling in which the dangerous hunt, if successful, may not only satisfy the need for exhilaration, where untested men and boys would arrive home fully grown through their adventures, but also where a high price may be had for the precious whale oil acquired from their victims.
There is, however, another side to this tale. The book Moby-Dick (or Moby Dick) warns of the price of obsession and the single-mindedness of pursuing a goal whose only purpose is to recklessly face and destroy the monster within at all costs. The story is deeply symbolic ... Read More:

I would agree with the first reviewer, this is a very good telling of a true story, showing the courage and determination of the merchant service during WW11. The event is well told, with a good pace to the film. The acting is good and is suitably understated. The viewer is given a good sense of what it must have been like for the men concerned, who dealt with a very dangerous situation in a most matter of fact way. I would recommend this film. It is also a film, in my opinion, which can be watched many times and its fascination still holds the viewer.

This is a wonderful TV series. In reality, there are 33 episodes (including the pilot in the BBC's Comedy Playhouse series), although only 11 have survived the massive destruction of video and film material that took place at the BEEB in the early 70s.
The ensemble cast play members of a cathedral ecclesiastical community, who constantly in-fight amongst themselves. There is the Bishop (William Mervyn), the Archdeacon (Robertson Hare) and the chaplain, Noote (Derek Nimmo), who are lazy, ineffectual and enjoy life's pleasures. This triumvirate is engaged in a constant battle of wits against the reforming and high-church Dean (John Barron, sadly no episodes from the two seasons with Ernest Clark in this role have survived).
OH YES!! I'd waited years for this to come out on Video and it didn't, and then DVD, now it's finally happened, and I still can't believe it!
One of Googie Withers' greatest movies (I contacted Ms. Withers about this movie some years ago and she was kind enough to reply from Australia) Googie made many great films during this period of her career, and was one of Britain's biggest film stars, but no part had as many close-up shots as this which are always so very difficult to do, and very demanding.
Pearl (Withers) is married to Publican Joe Bond who mistreats her. Having hardened her own persona to become accustomed to this she takes advantage of an impressionable young youth (Gordon Jackson) to forge her way into 'disposing' of her unwanted ... Read More:

i remember seeing this series on t.v. when i was just a kid and it scared the living beejaysus outta me.i cant see what all the fuss was about now.you can see many similarites in the opening scenen with other horror films such as 28 days later, the stand, the crazies etc. there aren't any jump out of your seat moments but the atmosphere and exposure of a selfish human nature in a "survival of the fittest" setting is dark and is in itself a horror. the triffids themselves are a new species of plant that came to earth via a comet and are like big lumps of broccoli who poison and then eat their victims.99% of the population of the world is blind after a comet burned out an optical nerve in the eye, and therefore the human race is being hunted down by plants (who move at 2mph!!). i think it would take an ingenious ...
