And once again, little old Jacobi is back to the charge with the promise of
more yuks and huyuks than ever in the rip-roaring, funtastic,
abso-bloody-lutely awesome series, Cadfael -- well, not really.
And I might as well say "well" with the good ole Jacobian emphasis (try
WE-e-E-elll), as we're in for more Jacobian smirks than ever, ranging from the
sad, beady eyes of a French bulldog to the glittery expression of a Lutheran
heretic centuries before his time.
So, may we say that Cadfael ranks among the greatest British series of all
time? Let's have a closer look...
I heard quite a bit about the book, so started reading it. Never really got into it so decided to rent the film out (as you do)...although i have to say, i really was disappointed.
I thought the story was mediocre, the start and middle was quite good, it was like a big build up to something. Something like an unexpected twist; although i waited and waited..then it was over.
The quality of the film's transferance onto DVD is poor and the dubbing in particular is suspect, but this film is undoubtedly a classic. It's apparently the earliest example of a 'portmanteau' horror film(,a film which narrates a series of separate tales). Here, an architect visits a country house and tells the guests of a recurring nightmare he's had about the house and the inhabitants, prompting them to relate a series of supernatural experiences, the creepiest of which is the last one, involving a ventriloquist (Michael Redgrave) and a seemingly independent dummy. When the tales have been related, there is an horrific climax and a disturbing twist: the protagonist seems to be stuck in a nightmarish 'groundhog day' scenario.
All of the stories are entertaining ... Read More:

These two series of the House of Eliott is a delight to watch. They are fun and full of different adventures of the two sister Evie and Bea. It is a delight and is a must for any one who likes British drama. I highly recomend them both. I cannot wait to see three.

I agree with much of what the last reviewer wrote, but I don't dislike this movie at all. It is a bit lacking technically, but I certainly didn't think of turning it off. Screenplay just not quite lucid enough to make this a much better movie but it certainly has its moments. There is a fear factor there, and the voice projection scenes give it a bit of bite, or menace. I also liked the scientific spiele used by Revill, the sceptic physicist, who I thought was excellent. I'd guess that the makers of 'Ghostbusters' drew heavily on this film for their supernatural research terms and techniques. And yes there are real psychic and supernatural phenomena invetigators out there who actually use the kind of equipment Revill was using here, though I expect they are a little more compact ... Exciting and fast-paced movie starring Roger Moore.
This probably needs a second viewing in order to follow the complicated plot - the story unfolds rather fast and so does not give much time to take things in! Plenty of action and lots of humour in this. Stars some big names including; Norman Eshley, Derek Francis, a stunning Ursula Howells, Bernard Lee, Francis Matthews and Michael Robbins.
It's easy to forget until you see a picture like this how handsome Roger Moore was - and how fit he was too in his forties here - but with the looks and ability of a guy in his twenties!
My wife enjoyed this series when it was first on the tv and it was her choice to revisit it - we had been unable to source it from elsewhere. She was absolutely delighted to be able to view it again and thoroughly enjoyed it 2nd time round. My compliments on the DVD sevice it is so easy to use and very fast and efficient - well done!

What a wonderful and gripping series.
Shows clearly the wastefulness and despair of war.
Has a distinct feeling of menace running through it as everyone is at risk and various factions compete and struggle for survival and supremacy.
Illustrates how difficult it is to trust anyone, especially in a "police" state.
Absolutely wonderful character acting all round, especially by Bernard Hepton as Albert Foiret.
Clever and subtle script that combines the menace (above) while at the same time provides brilliant cameos of everyday life.
A real lesson to everyone on how to write and produce drama.
Worth every penny.

Seeing the series repeated after an interval of several years, I am struck by the subtlety of the character depiction. In particular the characters of Albert Foiret and Ludwig Kessler.
Albert has enormous courage, verging on the heroic. At the same time the aquisitive, mercenary side to his character is unattractive, especially when it is in conflict with his feelings for Monique.
Kessler is a million miles away from the stock Gestapo character of an unthinking, sadistic brute. He is cultured, intelligent and utterly devoted to the Nazi cause in which his belief is absolute. In previous centuries he would have been a dedicated churchman, using burning at the stake as a valid method of saving souls.
Brandt and Reinhardt are attractive characters in their own ways. Patriotic ... Read More:
