I think they should not have mixed the three books to make this film. This has made it confusing and took away the charm of Mrs. Gaskell's writing... such a pity! Why cant they stick to the book??? Why must everything appeal to the TV audiance nowadays?

ignore all the negative reviews on amazon. obviously written by people who did not understand the film.
a great and true story of how one devoted christian changed world history, despite all the rich vested interests against him.
seventy years before lincoln, willberforce was trying to end the slave trade in the world and in the end succeeded.
great movie, all the bits fit together and are authentic (although the slave ship flying what I thought was the original American revolutionary flag - British Union flag plus 13 red and white stripes, was actually the flag the the east india company - and the cousins "borrowed" it for a couple of years)
buy and enjoy

I haven't read the fourth book yet, so can't make any comment about how true the plot runs. However, what struck me most about this film, is how much the pupils of Hogworts seem to have grown up! They're moody, argumentative, and when Ron told Harry to 'p*** off' I had to rewind to make sure I'd heard him correctly! Its clearly aimed more at an older audience, as the first three films were much more child friendly - I'm not sure if I like this turn of direction, and I certainly wouldn't recommend this one for younger viewers! But that aside, its still a great film and builds upon the success of the previous Harry Potter films very nicely.

For me,Johnny Depp makes this film. The storyline is absolute nonsense and borders on comedy. Not unlike,Hound of the Baskervilles. However,Depp carries you thro' with superb acting.I would neither encourage nor put anybody off seeing this film.

The producers of Layer Cake tried very hard to shape this standard gangster fare into something fresh, cool and original. They failed.
Matthew Vaughn who produced Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch lazily decided to produce yet another gangster flick, without Guy Ritchie, as a vehicle to move him into the mainstream as a director.
Having a proven track record in the genre, it was a safe bet the film would find an audience, however I assume he couldn't produce a film with any similarity to Lock, Stock and decided to produce this rubbish instead.
I also couldn't stomach the publicity overload for this film, which was plain perplexing. Nobody seemed to understood what a hot iron scorching the bonnet of a Range Rover has to do with ... Read More:

This latest version of Evelyn Waugh's "Brideshead Revisited" is a middling success: neither a triumph nor a failure. More importantly it does not diminish the grandeur and mighty ghost of the 1980's Masterpiece Theater production with Jeremy Irons as Charles Ryder and Anthony Andrews as Sebastian though Matthew Goode (as Ryder) and Ben Whishaw (as Sebastian) do their best, through good and cogent performances, to top their predecessors. And while Irons and Andrews operated in a production that ran many hours and therefore had the luxury of time to define their characters, Goode and Whishaw have only 2+ hours to focus and grab our attention.
Director Julian Jarrold and writers Andrew Davies and Jeremy Brock do a more than competent job of reshaping the sprawling Waugh novel: ... Read More:

The Singing Detective is certainly one of the best things ever to be seen on TV. It certainly caused a stir in the UK at the time because of its explicit treatment of sexuality. The story certainly is multi layered and fascinating and the acting is superb down to really minor characters. Usually the success is attributed to Potters's writing. When you read the screenplay which was published by Faber & Faber you certainly read an interesting story (although somewhat influenced by DH Lawrence) but you are not as overwhelmed as you are when seeing it on screen. So from my point of view The Singing Detective is at least as much the product of Jon Amiel and the mesmerizing pictures he creates plus his direction of actors. I find it amazing that the beautiful Alison Steadman never became ... Read More:

tried at least 5 times to get into this but couldn't get past the first 15 minutes. There are so many characters who only appear in disjointed, irritating little sections - as soon as you start to find one vaguely interesting, it switches to another. Some great names in this but what they were thinking of when they signed up to be in this
