I watched this when first broadcast in 1982 and was utterly hooked - it was one of those programmes that was compulsory viewing and much discussed at work the following day. (although I remember Clive James, in his TV reviewer guise at the time, was a bit rude about the fact that it could make a heroine out of Connie, queen of the files.... well, you can't please everybody).

Anyway, the years went by, and then a couple of years ago I accidentally stumbled across this again as it was being repeated on BBC4 or some such ghetto channel. Unfortunately I'd missed the first couple of episodes (they were broadcasting it two episodes at a time) but I got hooked once more and made suitable arrangements to ensure that I caught the rest of ... Overall this film is very sharp but does suffer from the ocasional noticeable grain. The picture quality is good and is worth the upgrade to Blu Ray just don't expect to be dazzled as this has simply been transfered and not touched up or remastered. The sound is dolby true hd and whilst DTS hd would have been better the sound is still decent. Also all the bonus features from the 2 disc dvd version are here on 1 blu ray disc so if you are a big Batman fan then this film is recommended.

be warned though, I have just found out that Warner have planned a special blu ray release of this film next year to mark the official 20th anniversary of the film. As this already contains a wealth of bonus material rumours are that it will have a fully remastered ... Read More:

No way is the transfer on this film anywhere near as good as the Dark Knight. It is obvious that the film has simply been transfered to Blu Ray without any touching up or remaster job being done. That said it is still a good transfer and very crisp and clear for an older film but their is some noticeable grain at times. Sound is dolby true hd which sounds great on a good set up.

The biggest selling point for me with this film is that not only does it contain all the bonus features from the 2 disc dvd edition it also contains the Tim Burton commentary track. many of you may remember that this was missing from the 2 disc dvd. The reason for this was that at the last minute the BBFC decided to cut one scene from the film where catwoman puts some areosol ... Read More:

Your decision to buy this Blu Ray will rest on the 2 things, how big a Batman fan you are and wether you liked the film.

I say the above as many fans have debated for years the fact that the 2 Tim Burton films are the only ones worth bothering with as this and Batman and Robin have often been slagged off. I personaly liked both this and Batman and Robin, and certainly whilst they are the 2 worst Batman films they do have a few things going for them.

If you liked this film then the Blu ray release is worth getting as the picture is nice and crisp and the sound is suitably meaty. All the bonus features from the 2 disc edition have been included aswell.

For me,Johnny Depp makes this film. The storyline is absolute nonsense and borders on comedy. Not unlike,Hound of the Baskervilles. However,Depp carries you thro' with superb acting.I would neither encourage nor put anybody off seeing this film.

Yes, it is a pity that the movie is not presented in its intended theatrical aspect ratio 1.85. But to make it clear it is not presented in "butchered 1.33 to fit conventional TV screens" or a "TV-friendly crop of the original wide-screen movie" either. The movie is presented in its original open matte format, which means it was shot in conventional 1.33 to fit TV screens. For theatrical release the picture was then cropped at the top and the bottom, a common practice since the Fifties. So the picture is nothing missing here as the other reviewers suggest. Instead, it shows more information at the top and the bottom than the theatrical release. Just for the record.

From an early age I had an interest in the Tudors, and my parents bought me this film when I was still at school. I very much enjoyed it at the time - it seemed to encapsulate everything that was interesting about Henry VIII, his personal life and his six wives. The costumes and settings were inspiring to my imagination and that is something which I can still appreciate today.

Watching this film as an adult a few years later, I think it's good but I can't work up the same enthusiasm that I felt when watching it as a child. The depictions of the wives, which back then I found memorable and easy to understand, now seem cliched and almost cartoony. The pace of the film is faster than I remember and the drama quickly shifts from one wife to the next, without much reference ... Read More:

Beyond Caravagio's art there is very little evidence to support an in depth biographical study. What there is (principally a few police records) may or may not suggest a violent man prone to fits of jealous rage and violent behaviour. Jarman, however, provides a beautifully realised poetical interpretation, charged with a latent sexuality, that conveys a complex blend of urban poverty and aristocratic patronage. Jarman succeeds in placing a 'modern day' Caravaggio amongst his baroque compositions, recognising the artists's immense talent for the human form, light and shadow and use of colour. The acting is awesome and the sets show how a highly imaginative crew can pull together the essence of a period with grace and historical insight. Amazing.

Lovely opening credits with a snowy scene leading to the House at Pooh Corner, leads into reminiscence of an earlier Christmas, then into an older film where Pooh has forgotten to add his request to the Christmas list. I prefer the older cartoons. The voices are much better. Then another newer film. Not very long but gives you a warm fuzzy feeling no matter how old you are.

DVD : Batman [1989]

Batman [1989]

starring: Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Kim Basinger, Robert Wuhl, Pat Hingle
directed by: Tim Burton
September 25, 1998

This the first movie since the comic 1960's farce has to be the best at least until the latest 'Dark Knight'. Michael Keaton seems to live the role of both Bruce Wayne and the Batman to great effect. This along with the Gothic view of Gotham and of coarse the Joker played by movie legend Jack Nicholson. It traces the killing of Wayne's Mother and Father to him fighting back to gain redemption against the evil side of the city. Vicky Vale complements the whole movie making Batman choose between saving her and beating the Joker. Plot wise it's quite simple with few twists and turns but great dark fun. The Batmobile is also awesome and reflects the new 'Dangerous' Batman moving away from the cheesy Comic incarnation. All in all a brilliant and long movie and a tribute to the great script ...
