He likes to distill his movies' themes into a single word, Sydney Pollack explains on "Out of Africa"'s DVD. Here, that word is "Possession:" The possessiveness of the colonialists trying to make Africa theirs; to rule her with their law, settle on the local tribes' land, dress their African servants in European outfits (complete with a house boy's white gloves), import prized belongings like crystal to maintain the comforts of European civilization, and teach African children to read, to remove their "ignorance." And the possessiveness of human relationships; the claim of exclusivity arising from a wedding license, the encroachment on personal freedom resulting if such a claim is raised by even one partner - regardless whether based on a legal ... 'Foyle's War' is one of those marvelous BBC productions that tells the tales of England during World War II. It is set in Hastings, East Sussex, near the beaches of South East England, during 1942 and 1943. Foyle's War tells the story of Christopher Foyle, played by Michael Kitchen, Detective Chief Superintendent, whose job is to keep the peace on the home front during WWII. Helping Foyle is Detective Sergeant Paul Milner, played by Anthony Howell. He was a policeman before the war and lost a leg in a fierce battle and returned to the force by the urging of Foyle. Samantha Stewart, a beauty on her own, is played by Honeysuckle Weeks and is a member of the Mechanized Transport Corps. She is conscripted to drive for Foyle. She sticks her nose in police ... We are going on a journey. Sam (Honeysuckle Weeks) is at the wheel whilst Foyle (Michael Kitchen) sits and ponders on aspects of the case. Until he finds the answers we are all kept in suspense. Now, there are those who interrupt you as you sit glued to the box watching a favourite detective series, with those words you dread the most "I think it was him" "It was him, it's got to be him" Your concentration is lost and you've said "Be quiet" more times than you remember. Well, relax this is unlikely to happen with Foyle's War. The script and plots are so good they keep you guessing right to the end. Like an enormous jigsaw puzzle the pieces have been emptied on the table and only Foyle knows how they all fit together and during the process we are taken back in ... Read More:

So Much Owed By So Many To So Few', Why such a title for a review? After all we all know how indebted we are to the RAF, Home Guard and others for saving Britain in 1940. Foyle's War leaves us in no doubt about that. What I mean is that without this small cast of actors that have leant their time and talents to bring 'Foyle's War' to our screens, we might never have known as much about what life was like for civilians and RAF pilots in WW2. Though, just how many pilots actually went home to their families after surviving a dog fight with an ME109 remains a point in question. It's nice though to think it happened sometimes for those pilots whose families lived nearby. Snippets of information carefully included within the script and progress of it from one crime scenario ... Read More:

Foyle's War gives a valuable insight into civilian life and duties during WW2. The drama and performance by all the cast is brilliant. Drama is one thing that the UK does best. Every 90 minute episope of Foyle's War has been carefully thought out in detail. Watching Foyle's War may not be living it..but you come very close. If there were ten stars and not five in the rating, that would be my choice.

England's Best, October 25, 2008

These DVD's encompass 1-5 of the series. Once you start viewing this marvelous English production, you will be hooked. England had many stressors during the war and some are portrayed the best I have seen in any production. If you love history, if you love England and if you love BBC productions, than this is the series for you!

I haven't read the book, or seen the original 1970s film, so I cannot comment on how true to the original storyline this version is, but I found it to be a very enjoyable film. The child actors were top notch, especially the character of Bobbi, and of course Richard Attenborough and Gregor Fisher are superb too. The photography, costumes and score are also very well done (for an ITV production anyway!)

A great family film for watching on a cold Sunday afternoon.

After six years in limbo as EON and the new owners of MGM/UA found themselves and the series locked in legal action at lawsuits, Timothy Dalton decided too much time had elapsed to renew his licence to kill, ushering in the Brosnan era. At the time hailed for `saving' the series (just as Dalton and Moore had been before him), the star's own bitter feud with the producers and the success of Daniel Craig in reinventing the role seem to have combined with disappointment with some of Brosnan's subsequent Bond films to the point where it's harder and harder to find any Bond fans with a good word to say about his tenure. But in 1995 GoldenEye was certainly welcomed with open arms and blockbuster business and it holds up remarkably well.

If there's a problem with Brosnan's ... Read More:

James Bond (Brosnan) investigates the mysterious dealings of Goldeneye, a satellite which was kidnapped by a group of Russians.

Pierce Brosnan's (Mamma Mia!) first role as the famous British spy is probably his finest to date with specific and exciting acting, not to mention he is the cheekiest and smartest Bond since Connery.

Six years Bond fanatics had to wait after `Licence to Kill' was released in 1989 and weren't we treated? Goldeneye has everything a Bond fan could ever wish for, high action, attractive female leads and a fantastic trio of villains to make the ultimate knockout action thriller.

Brosnan's performance is excellent and really helps gain that edge of your seat excitement but also an ultimate relaxed feeling to. Bond's first ... Read More:
