I had been putting off watching this film as I thought it would be either depressing or cliched. It was neither. It was shocking, moving and funny. The acting is superb, especially the child actors who are amazing.
I will definitely read the book now.

It shouldn't be marketed as a gay film; it's a film with some gay characters but it is really a straight coming of age story. The acting of Michael Legge is not bad at all, as is shown by his subsequent stage and TV career (Shameless for eg.)
and it's nice to see Limerick on screen too.
The problem lies in the script and direction which could be much tighter and the reluctance to exploit the particularity of the setting, we could be in any provincial town in Europe or North America.
So in going for the universal themes of love and friendship; growing up and finding yourself; Gleeson has created a rather ordinary soap opera which would fit into Eastenders or Corrie without difficulty.

What a pleasant surprise! A truly funny British film with some great acting - even from Lulu. Just buy/rent it and watch it - you'll not regret it. It certainly is up there with Four Weddings and a Funeral.
