I watched this when first broadcast in 1982 and was utterly hooked - it was one of those programmes that was compulsory viewing and much discussed at work the following day. (although I remember Clive James, in his TV reviewer guise at the time, was a bit rude about the fact that it could make a heroine out of Connie, queen of the files.... well, you can't please everybody).

Anyway, the years went by, and then a couple of years ago I accidentally stumbled across this again as it was being repeated on BBC4 or some such ghetto channel. Unfortunately I'd missed the first couple of episodes (they were broadcasting it two episodes at a time) but I got hooked once more and made suitable arrangements to ensure that I caught the rest of ... TRUE ROMANCE is a very good film. It's brutal and funny and has an excellent cast - that is with one exception: Christian Slater is a total miscast in the lead role. Otherwise it's got brilliantly staged action scenes (I like it when the pimp gets it). Finally released in its UNRATED version in the UK (rather than the cut R Rated as on VHS).

Bertolucci clearly enjoys the cinematic references in this film, which is, in part, a paean to the glory days of Hollywood. This aspect of the movie is perhaps the most successful.

Set against the backdrop of the 1968 Parisian riots, The Dreamers is a study of sexual awakening and youthful idealism. The claustrophobic and cloistered world of Parisian brother and sister, Theo and Isabelle, becomes a place of discovery for them and the American innocent Matthew, whom they invite to join them while their laissez-faire parents are away. Within their sprawling apartment the three indulge in games of sexual manipulation that turn into obsession and confused despair.

The problem with this otherwise impressive film is that Adair's characters are ... Read More:

Strange how many people find a short condemnation of something unhelpul.
Both my wife and I agreed that this was the most tedious film we have ever watched through to the finish. Much of the dialogue needed to be read in subtitles. The pace was deadly slow. This was a case where real life produced a wholly unattractive set of characters doing awful things. How ironic that the murder of a brutal thug should be followed by universal condemnation of his killer who in turn was murdered by someone susequently granted a pardon!
Historic curiousity attracted me to the film. I should have stuck to Wickpedia.

Sci-fi film in which Bruce Willis plays a time traveller who travels back to the year 1990 from a dystopian future to stop a virus that in the year 1996 will wipe out most of mankind and forces the survivors to live underground. However, when he arrives in the year 1990, he is believed to be mad and is placed in a mental institution, under the care of psychiatrist Madeleine Stowe. Stowe also believes that Willis is suffering from mental illness, with paranoid delusions of the end of the world, but then Willis mysteriously escapes from the solitary confinement cell he has been placed in following an attempt to escape the mental institution. Six years later, in 1996, Willis appears again and tracks Stowe down, taking her hostage and forcing her to drive across country to Philadelphia, ... Read More:

The concept of Funny Games sounds somewhat interesting from an outsiders point of view. The fact that two young men, both in their teenage years can come around to a family's summer house and completely terrorise them sounds like an excellent concept. It's not a scary movie of the boogie-man variety, it would seem that there are no tricks, no special effects, and this of course can lead to a more realistic and terrifying experience. This is down to the fact that it is a real situation that could happen anywhere in the world at any time and, at the end of the day, that's what scares us the most.

'Funny Games' doesn't have any tricks, nor does it have any monster masks or gimmicks, so at the very least it lives up to that promise. Having not seen the German original, of which ... Read More:

This movie is a musical, there is no denying that. It is an adaptation from an original off-broadway show which had some, but not great, critical success. Versions of it have been staged all over the world, albeit in small - sometimes amateur theatres. If muscials are your type of thing then great, but even if they aren't, this movie has so much more. It has a real heart.

If you are looking for a movie about decency, humour, love and sacrifice - then look no further. This movie has to be one of my favourites of all time. The songs in it are not just musical numbers. They move the piece forward and give us insight into Hedwig's past and present feelings. They stand extreamely well on their own, but when placed into this medium of a fantastic story, with brilliant performances and characters ... Read More:

How can anybody use energy and so many still life beautiful pictures to make anything so boring, is beyond me.
You are kept outside looking on something that hints at a tragedy you cant be bothered with, because you never get engaged in the story.
Molina is the only positive element in the film, and he stands out the few minutes he is present, but what at waste of a good actor.

The traveler (Pitt) Goes abroad, looks, meets, gets what he comes for and go home to a wife who is barren and later dies of some mysterious illness that leaves her a very pretty patient, while the husband looks like he is dying of cancer. There is practically no dialog, and you are left with the impression of having seen the longest melancholic introduction to a flop and when it is finally over - You are left ... Read More:

Spy Game is everything we're not supposed to expect from a major Hollywood movie: engrossing, intelligent, well written, acted and directed. But that's just what it is and more, this is definitely the best thing I've seen since Memento. Although Pitt is really good and Redford plays himself as well as he has in years, I think the most credit should go to Tony Scott. In the hands of a lesser director this could have been something more like Mission Impossible. But Scott stays right on target, keeping us interested, developing the characters, and keeping the pacing nearly perfect. Scott also shows us that he's stayed with the times: he employs the full array of modern camera tricks like fast motion, reverse zooms and funky lenses but in a way that actually makes the film better instead of being an annoying distraction. ... Mild similarity to "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid". It's about two fugitives, people on the run, who keep getting themselves into one mess after another.

To think of this as a feminist chick flick is an open ended suggestion; but it can also be perceived as a story of two women who deal with things that have happened to them in the best way they can.
Geena Davis as Thelma, does a very good performance, as a meek woman with an overbearing husband, who finds herself with newfound freedom, albeit quite naive and trusting, even after what happened to her.

Susan Sarandon shines in this movie as well as Louise, a woman with a boyfriend who turns out to be not so bad of a guy. She also has a past to overcome, and the two of them are drawn together by the events that happen on the run.
