I saw the whole short season of ITV Austen adaptations from which the three featured here were chosen and the main mystery to me is why it was that by far the the best of them - 'Persuasion', with Rupert Penry Jones and the excellent Sally Hawkins - was not included in this set. This 'Mansfield Park' is especially poor, partly because Billie Piper - (a decent actress to be sure) is miscast. Even her looks, with her trademark bleached blonde hair and black eyebrows, are simply wrong for a lead Austen part. For Mansfield Park, look for the greatly superior version starring Frances O' Connor as Fanny Price. >>More Details

Basically, everyone else seems to have just said the plot of the film. I will say that this movie is one of the most beautiful, amazing films ever made and is best watched alone, with a clear mind. Heath Ledger is commonly said to have given a brilliant performance, which I agree with completely, on parr with his last complete role as the Joker. However, I do feel Jake Gyllenhaal is very underrated in this film, I love his performance, particularly at the start of the film, though his character's actions begin to get on my nerves towards the end, this doesn't take away from the magnificent ending, which could not be bettered. This box is a great little space saver, and features all six of the Dawson's creek series. I've always found buying previous complete seasons boxset, that they vary in size from an actual dvd case, too small, too big, not the right shape, however this, It's the same height as other dvd's so it will fit in perfectly. I had previously read reviews about this product, many people had found that the encountered problems with the dvds, freezing ect. I can't speak for every single collection, but i can say that sadly i ecnountered the same problem. All seasons worked fine, however, season 6 began freezing, making it impossible to watch. This is one of my favourite films. The cast are obviously enjoying being in it as well which makes it nice to watch. There's some wonderful barbed dialogue and the performances are (while maybe a little broad at times) excellent. The reason this gets 4 stars and not 5 is the DVD itself. It's only a bare bones release. There are a lot of deleted scenes from the film (including an entire subplot featuring Tracey Ullmann) that were cut out! In fact if you look up the trailer (youtube etc) for the film some of these scenes can be seen. Making it extremely frustrating that they are not included here. Southland tales left me feeling really ambivilant. On one hand you have a very brave sci fi epic with a satirical edge. One the other hand you also have a load of small stories tenously linked by and inchorrent plot. Now don't get me wrong I understood what the plot was supposed to be, it just didn't really make sense. Also I mentioned the satirical element, I think it was supposed to be satirical but the film actually lacked a humourous edga despite being quite funny. I wonder how intentional it was. Most of the acting is solid if unspectacular, the highlight being Sarah Michelle Geller who is the one genuine comedy element. Even Justin Timberlake was pretty good. I really enjoyed this film, but it's difficult to provide a review for it without it sounding a really tedious movie. It's definitely a gentle film, it's insightful and thought-provoking, but it makes you smile a lot too. I think if you liked 'Into the Wild', then you'll like this too - not that they're similar in story, but they are similar in part as they deal with the fact that it's not what you have or look like that's important in life, but it's all about people and feelings and relationships and how people you meet can sometimes change your life. It might even make you want to strike up conversations with people you've never met before. See now you think this is a mushy film - it isn't. Oh just watch it. >>More Details
