The novel of "The Other Boleyn Girl" is a bit of a guilty pleasure. I've re-read it many times and can see why it would make an excellent subject for dramatisation so why is it so difficult to get right? OK, so certain things may have to be altered to suit modern sensibilites. The fact that Mary was in her early teens when she started her affair with Henry wouldn't sit comfortably with your average cinema audience so I can understand that being altered.

I wanted to like this largely because I didn't like the Hollywood version. The chauvanist in me wanted to think that the BBC could do it better (it usually does after all.) Sadly, I was disapointed. The whole thing seemed colourless and lacking in the sense of drama and excitement ... Read More:

For anyone who thought Sex & The City was too camp to watch (didn't The Simpsons describe it as a show about four women who act like gay men?), here is the grown-up, sassy and sexy alternative.

David Duchovny may be better known for the X-Files, but here he looks much happier, playing the blocked writer Hank Moody, living fast in LA, trying to win back his partner Karen (Natasha McElhone(?) and their daughter from a wealthy but dull publisher, Bill. Kinda reminded me of The Philadelphia Story, minus the class warfare.

This comedy is sharp, with crackling dialogue, very explicit, but in the best sense, adult. The title may sound gimmicky, but it tells you what you need to know: that this is a series about adult relations and the ... Read More:

The story takes second place to the atmosphere. The attitude of the old ladies is beautifully done as one would expect, and is a fine exploration of the adult 'letting go' usually of children but here more complex. But, whilst all drama may be fantasy this one is particularly fantastical - who is the stranger? Why is he on the beach? How did he get to be a brilliant violinist without anyone in Poland (of all places!) noticing? nothing is explained and nothing makes any sense. Nor does the strange behaviour of the other characters (particularly the doctor). To the original storyteller perhaps it does not matter, though the significance of anti-German suspicion seems to be raised but not explored.

One really needs to be told at the beginning not ... Read More:

This film left me with the distinct feeling of having been ripped-off. A poster featuring some very purposeful-looking criminal types, a European setting, a famous director - there initially appeared to be much on offer. The reality, however, was quite different. In this mindless mess of a movie, Robert De Niro reprises his stock `90s role of gun-toting anti-hero and, in the company of a ragbag of international B-listers, takes a trip into the heart, not of darkness, but of dullness. The basic story is, well, pretty basic. The film consists mostly of a series of ridiculous stand-offs and arguments between De Niro and the other players, who comprise a gang engaged in some kind of convoluted theft. Oh, and there are couple of car-chases - wow! Jean Reno becomes De Niro's ... Read More:

Ronin is, in my opinion, is John Frankenheimer's best film - even picked up a few awards along the way. Robert De Nero's take on Sam is excellent, and even Sean Bean does well in this, as the crazy gun toting Spence. The star of the movie has to be Natascha McElhone as Deirdre; desperate to get that case no matter what. Was really pleased to see Jean Reno in this, his French flair being a centrepiece.

If you don't know what Ronin is about then prepare for a whirlwind plot, dodgy plans and wasted opportunities (by the gang, not direction), oh and probably the best car chases I've seen in the 90s. The best one being in Paris, closely followed by the one in Nice.

The film has a lot of twists and turns, and is a pleasure to watch, with De Nero, ... Read More:

The joyous sweep of Branagh's "Much Ado" or the logic of the concept in his "Twelfth Night" are missing.
The cuts are too great and the song and dance numbers can outstay their welcome, so that the unique flavour and pleasures of the play get lost.
Branagh should have had the courage to include the deleted scenes in the DVD version.
That said there are some great turns from the Anglo-American cast and the ending is spot on for the melancholy/humour balance.
And at least it isn't set in Japan!

This is a really good film. It is a silly dark comedy. Its like a darker but also sillier version of Shallow Grave. If you like your comedy black this is for you. Its not friends or Run Fat Boy Run which would explain all the one and two star reviews. Not Peg or Schwimmer,s usual stuff. This has a much darker tone than Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuss. Although that stuff is violent it has a positive out look on friendship and is also fun. This has very little laugh out load stuff, and is more like grim ironic chortling stuff. Very good but only watch if you like this sort of thing.

My wife hated it.

George Clooney and the astonishingly beautiful Natascha McElhone shine in this Soderbergh low budget remake. It is a slow, mature movie about a love story on a haunted spaceship. Clever dialogue and solid characterisation are at the centre of this hypnotising movie along with a sense of impending doom. The music and cinematography are first class.
If you are mentally challenged and you think that explosions and/or weapons are the apex of cinematic joy then avoid 'Solaris' and go rent Transformers or Wind Talkers.

As a child in Ireland, Frankie McGuire (Brad Pitt) sees his dad gunned down for his involvement with the Irish Republican Army (IRA). As an adult, McGuire has followed in his dad's footsteps. When the IRA decides it needs more firepower, they hatch a plan that involves McGuire going to the United States to pick up a shipment of Stinger missiles. Through American IRA contacts, McGuire adopts a false identity and housing is arranged with a non-involved Irish family headed by New York City cop Tom O'Meara (Harrison Ford).

There is an impression that The Devil's Own is an action film. The Internet Movie Database has it listed as "Action/Drama/Thriller". Although there are some action elements in the film, this is really a tragic drama, almost in a classical sense, and it's ... Read More:

This is a really weird film for me. I've only ever seen it twice, and it having been some time since I saw it the first time around, I was surprised to find that on my second viewing, I'd only really remembered about the first twenty minutes or so - a part which had stuck in my mind quite vividly.

Despite its suspense-type thriller content, along with some really explicit scenes featuring 'kinky' sex, ironically, the most memorable moments in this film for me are the romantic ones. The movie gets off to a great start, and gives the viewer the misconception they're in for a real soppy love story, about two complete strangers falling in love at first sight - but it's far more complex than that - and a lot more exciting too; falling for a strange dishy guy with kinky ...
