Wasn't sure what to expect from this, and I admit to leaving it on the coffee table for weeks before I finally slid it into the machine, but man....... this is easily the best film I've seen this year. Narratively inventive, stylistically diverse, philosophically robust, Todd Haynes has created something that is at the cutting edge of modern biography. Pure class!

War movies don't usually appeal to me but "Yanks" is truely a great film and it dosn't surprise me one bit that it was a box office hit back in 1979. It's a beautiful story with a great cast, both moving and funny at times and it even has a cameo from Lynne Perrie.
So, even if you're not a fan of war movies, "Yanks" is still a classic piece of work which you have just got to see because I for one was pleasantly surprised when I purchased it.
Highly Recommended!

The acting (especially from Lopez) is very wooden. This manages to ruin a reasonable story line and it defeats all attemptes by the supporting cast to keep the story on track. Also, she cannot dance. An incredible piece of casting that destroys the film.

For once, a Hollywood film which parts from Hollywood story conventionality. There is no hero, no bad guy, no good guy, and no happy ending.
There is some brilliant acting, great filming, pretty good sex scenes (can't knock that), and an ambiguous end.
OK, anyone familiar with modern detective shows will know that the police bit is full of holes - the police would definitely have found and convicted the people they needed to (I won't say more, as I don't want to spoil).
But though the brilliant acting owes everything to Hollywood, the other good things about the film owe everything to its French origins.
This film was made AFTER Private Benjamin. Military drill sergeants shouting ino the faces of cadets wasn't something made up by this movie, as good as it is.

This film is a classic and viscerally honest portrayal of human conflict and personal growth. It clearly depicts working class young adults who sought to break away from past barriers and limitations and build better lives for themselves. It is a coming of age story, where a full spectrum of feelings are explored as young adults learn about fulfilling their potential, building value systems and attempting to fulfill personal desires with honesty and integrity on many levels. Two hot young stars were cast in the leading roles: Richard Gere who was riding high on his recent success in "American Gigolo" and Debra Winger who shined in her role in "Urban Cowboy". With stars of this caliber, it surprised me to learn (in the Special Features section) that doubts ... Read More:

I'm 28, and I have to admit, it was so refreshing seeing a beautifully told love story for people of an older generation. There seems to be this taboo surrounding it where, upon turning 40 or so, people no longer need to feel loved, and are no longer capable of experiencing love that gives you butterflies and knocks your feet from under you and leaves you poleaxed. This film puts paid to that in short order.
Nicholas Sparks is the father of romance - a lone male voice in amongst a sea of oestrogen - and he has a way of creating epic love that puts you right there with the people feeling it. Film adaptations don't really live up to the standard of the book (the only exception being, perhaps, The Notebook another of Sparks's [a film of such power and ... Read More:
