I fell in love with this film during the first 10 minutes of seeing it. It's hilarious yet serious at times, Parker and Stone play off each other brilliantly and this film shows their fantastic comedic brains.
I can't fault this movie, it will make you laugh from start to end!

DVD : The Last Voyage [1960] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

The Last Voyage [1960] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

starring: Robert Stack, Dorothy Malone, George Sanders, Edmond O'Brien, Woody Strode
directed by: Andrew L. Stone
October 24, 2006

The cast of this early colour disaster movie is heavyweight - George Sanders as the captain and fifties favourites Robert Stack and Dorothy Malone as the main love interest - but there's no doubt about the real star of The Last Voyage, for the film makers sank a real ocean liner, the legendary Ile de France, in order to make it.

This accounts for the gripping realism of the film from beginning to end - those tilting art deco interiors and grimy, slowly flooding engine room spaces are all real.

The dialogue is a little hackneyed, particularly in the scenes of normal shipboard life before the explosion, but once things start to go seriously wrong it can't help but keep you on the edge of your seat. Well worth watching, ... Read More:

DVD : Airplane! [1980]

Airplane! [1980]

starring: Robert Hays, Julie Hagerty, Leslie Nielsen, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Lloyd Bridges
directed by: Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, Jerry Zucker
March 05, 2001

Airplane is the funniest film I have ever seen. The plot is simple, an ex fighter pilot Ted, goes to the airport to persuade his ex girlfriend Elaine to get back with him. When she says no, Ted buys a ticket (smoking or non smoking!) and boards the plane, the flight crew then succumb to food poisoning and then its up to Ted with Elaine's help, to land the plane! The jokes come thick and fast and are genuinly funny. The only complaint is that this DVD has no extras but the film is side-splittingly funny, buy it now!

There are roughly two kinds of films: story centred and image centred. Douglas Sirk is one of the greatest directors in matter of image making: his frames are colourful, the action is balanced in the frame both vertically and horizontally, surfaces are not flatly lit... this film is one of the best examples of his style.
But Douglas Sirk is also considered as a good storyteller and one of the best melodrama makers... this film is one of the best examples of his skilful melodrama making.
In my opinion this film is Sirk's best film.

DVD : 1941 [1979] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

1941 [1979] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

starring: Dan Aykroyd, Ned Beatty, John Belushi, Lorraine Gary, Bobby Di Cicco
directed by: Steven Spielberg
March 23, 1999

First saw this back in 1989ish on BBC 2 as a 12 year old and loved it then. Only seen it a couple of times since and, seeing as it feels like it will never come out on region 2, i went and bought this.
Film isnt hysterically funny but it will make you laugh. v v v entertaining, great to look at, great score, great direction.
Extras are brilliant - 1hr 40 documentary, lots of deleted scenes, extras and home movies.
This new directors cut extends the movies running time to 2hrs 40. Some of the new scenes work, others are just plain dull. But its just great to actually find a copy of this movie.
Still could do with a region 2 edition but for the moment this is the best we can get here in the UK.

ever since i saw this film back in the early nineties i have always enjoyed it (yes it was made in 1983 i saw the repeats on tv). the characters were played by good actors eg gene hackman, fred ward and patrick swayze. randal tex cobb always seems to play the same character in all his films not in a bad way as hes entertaining in this film. the action still manages to entertain especially the final sequence when they go into the prison camp. take away all the politics and treat it like a film and it is a good film. thats all it is a film and not a have a go at communism by the americans . some one thought the story would make a profit so they went ahead and made it anyone who sees more than whats in the film has some issues. so good film.

I saw this film possibly a year ago now and I'm still going on about it. I'm so disappointed I can't rent it off Amazon (at least I don't think I can). It's such a hilarious premise - a bunch of Polish actors impersonating Nazis to sow confusion among them - it's a kind of 'war farce' unique type of genre. I really recommend it - it will have you laughing out loud. If you liked the farce elements of say, Frasier, you will love this. I must buy it or at least see it again! I bet they had such fun making it.
