This is my favourite film of all time and I'd recommend it to anyone. Life affirming, poignant, moving - altogether fabulous. I've just bought this dvd to replace the video version which I no longer have the technology to play. There's no way I could be without a copy of this film, it makes the greyest day a little brighter.

DVD : Rosemary's Baby [1968]

Rosemary's Baby [1968]

starring: Mia Farrow, John Cassavetes, Ruth Gordon, Sidney Blackmer, Maurice Evans
directed by: Roman Polanski
November 05, 2001

'Rosemary's Baby' is without doubt Roman Polanski's best movie.
Still after fourty years this film scares me. Not in the kind of gruesome (torture-porn) kind of way that the Saw franchise do, but in a deeply psychological way, in the spirit of all the great twentieth century horror films. Rosemary (Mia Farrow) is the young married woman who's just moving into an upstate New York appartment block with her husband, actor Guy (John Cassavetes). The pair soon get to know their neighbours (mainly) Minnie Castevet & her husband Roman Castevet (Sidney Blackmer).
Rosemary's baby is a very scary film, not gruesome (sometimes mildly explicit) but it has that claustrophobic eery feeling & after the first half of the film the feeling that no one ... Read More:

In 1965 no studio wanted to finance this film, it was only when Director Melville Shavelson guaranted John Wayne's participation that he did get financed.
And why should John Wayne be interested in making a film about the formation of the State of Israel? Acording to some Wayne biographers the 'Duke' thougth it was a good story to remind americans what their country was all about, since the films recounts the crucial role of a jewish american coronel in the formation of the Israeli army, and the role of the USA in helping the figth for indepence of the small and opressed jewish nation. Wayne helped finance the picture as a response to the liberals who acused the USA of Imperialism, but he only apperead in the supporting role of an american general, leaving the ... Read More:

The best place for this film is in your memories if you ever saw it on TV all those years ago. To say it hasn't aged well is the biggest understatement since " Joan Rivers looks like she may have had a little cosmetic surgery"
It is frenetic American sub humour of the Mel Brooks mode. Lots of hammy gurning, running around and if the joke is not funny shout a lot to make it funny.
I remembered seeing this on TV and thought it was OK, but that was a long time ago and it just grates now. All those star cameos and it can't lift it up to mediocre.
Airplne raised the bar, this tried to crawl under it. Avoid, even at the cheap price the next stop from your dvd player will be the bin

Roman Polanski,s first American film released in 1968 is generally viewed as a horror film though if it is it's a horror film its one with no traditional horror elements in it. There is no blood , or bogeyman (Satan makes a blurry cameo appearance in that famous rape scene) or chases down corridors or really any of the machinations associated with horror. However it does deal explicitly with the horror of alienation , paranoia , fear and sheer hopelessness. In many ways these are ephemeral horrors more conducive to most of our life's than we would like to admit and therefore much more relevant.
This DVD is part of a slew of re-issues fronted by Paramount (All with accompanying posters) and might just be the best of the bunch -though I am sure others would disagree ... Read More:

Whatever Happened To Aunt Alice? [1969] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

starring: Geraldine Page, Ruth Gordon, Rosemary Forsyth, Robert Fuller, Mildred Dunnock
directed by: Bernard Girard, Lee H. Katzin
November 02, 2004

This has to be one of the greatest movies of all time! Certainly one of my favourites, having watched it more than forty times to date, and still find it enjoyable!

Award-winning performances here from both Ruth Gordon and Geraldine Page, as they take the lead in this 60s classic! There is something very disturbing about seeing two women fighting - especially when one is much older than the other. Ruth Gordon was 73 years old here to be playing such a demanding part physically, and was outlived by Page by only two years! Geraldine Page is great as the evil killer, and compare this role to the very 'inoffensive' one she played just five years earlier in the 1964 classic 'Dear Heart' opposite Glenn Ford - the comparison is amazing!
