This film has been resonating with me days after watching it... not because it is the best film ever, but because it touched me deeply by the subtle way that it normalises the coming out experience and the subsequent gay relationships that can happen afterwards. It was just so, so refreshing to witness on screen the unfolding lives, with no apologies and no judgements... and no funny camp fall guy to get in the way of the true story. More Gay cinema like this... please! My only criticism really would be that it ended with a little too much over sentimentality... but hey that's Hollywood for you. When I first saw the trailer for this film I thought it was a love story between the two guys on the cover of the case. In fact it is a very different story. The film is about a young man coming out to himself and those around him over the course of a summer during the 80s. I found it hard to fault anything in this film. With a lot of gay cimema you do tend to find the production values sometimes look cheap and some of the acting is below par. With this film this never happens. You could easily be watching any mainstream film. The only thing I didn't like about this movie was that the ending wasn't wrapped in a neat bow. A crucial story about history, change, sterotypes, addiction, the civil rights movement and the ability to make 'good' choices. The cast are warm and likeable but the main character, a brilliant school teacher, with a huge drug habit, reaches his pupils in a way no other 'ordinary' adult could. Built around his developing relationship with one of his 15 yr old students, the story hits something more real than just the inappropriate nature of his behaviour. Todd Solondz's `Welcome to the Dollhouse' showed comic/absurd promise; his masturbation scene in `Happiness' overstepped the boundary of film taste but got everyone's attention. While I didn't enjoy "Storytelling" as much as I did the Director's two previous films, "Happiness" and "Welcome to The Dollhouse," Solondz continues to amaze with his depictions of just how awkward true life really is. As always, he masterfully shows the oft times tactless, cynical, transparent motivations of everyday suburban life and combines them with outrageous situations, giving a humorous view into the myriad of interesting quirky characters he creates. The gay surfer movie that people have wanted to see since 'Point Break', it's a classic love story, in a sunny California setting. Zach (Trevor Wright) is the 22 year old protagonist; he missed out on an art college scholarship, and is stuck working in a diner in a dead-end town. He spends his free time doing street art, surfing, and looking after his (stunning) 5 year old nephew, Cody. This family obligation has been foisted upon him by circumstances: his older sister, Cody's mother, has a string of self-destructive relationships and addictions.
