Ridley Scott has always been a master of striking visuals and he's found a good partner in Polish cinematographer Slawomir Idziak (both were Oscar nominated for this stirring war film). With its sharper imagery and full-blooded sound, this is a prime candidate for Blu-ray and it doesn't disappoint.
When I first saw this film I was shocked by just how gruesome the opening beach scene is. It made me want to watch the rest of the film with intent. I think the film itself is just a plain and simple blood bath 'horror' movie, which is what war is about, plain and simple. I've read other reviews saying the film has no plot but I don't think this degrades the film because if you want a big anti-war film, look no further. Not many other films I have seen make me less want to go to war.
The opening scene is argueably one of the best opening sequences in all of film history. It is also what the veterans themselves can call as close to the real thing but you're obviously safe, you've got a glass tv screen protecting you from all the ... Read More:

My husband and I read good things about this film and the impressive cast made us record it to watch.
We lasted only 30 minutes!
This film was a typical case of style over substance. The dialogue and look was too slick and unbelievable with stupid open-mouthed gum-chewing characters sporting the classic gelled back hair look. Al Pacino's dialogue upon finding the three dead security van drivers near the start was farcical. I thought 'so you're a forensics specialist too?' The way he was coming out with it in a motormouth fashion. Typical of a film trying too hard.
The absolutely ridiculous 'romantic' scene with De Niro and the woman from the store was laughable. A case of '20 Questions', GBH to the ears, then in for ... Read More:

I dislike this film considerably, though my own peeves have nothing to do with the acting, the special effects, the set, and so on. I'm basically upset at the simplicity of this film. It asks very few questions about why the attack on Pearl Harbour took place. But Pearl Harbour was the event that drew the United States into the Second World War. It is on a par with Hitler's invasion of Poland, so you'd think that a film with this title would treat the event with the seriousness it deserves. Not so.
Just in case you think my complaints are purely hypothetical, there have been some excellent revisionist histories published in the more than half century since the bombing took place. With the passage of time and the cooling of tempers, legitimate questions have ... Read More:

What do you get if you mix together a cliched idea, a mismatched cast and a poor director? Unfortunately the result is Natural Born Killers, an awkward blip in cinema history. Unashamedly ripping off the classic story of Bonnie and Clyde the film follows the rise and fall of the "charasmatic" serial killers awkwardly portrayed by failed popstar Juliette Lewis and "star" of cheers Woody Harrelson. Far from being a terrifying insight like Henry portrait of a serial killer this storyline is a spectacular flop. The characters are impossible to like and re-enforce the worst stereotypes about working class Americans. Failed homages to films are obvious, out of place and pretentious. The attempt to replicate Film Noir in an early scene only serves to remind the viewer that they ... Read More:

The real problem is that this film attempts to do too much and takes too long to do it.
Can anyone seriously believe that one man, Rafael McCawley, (Ben Affleck),
could get shot down in the Battle of Britain, escape from occupied France, shoot down umpteen Japanese airplanes over Hawaii, rescue drowning sailors from Pearl Harbor, take part in the "Doolittle raid" and still have time to fight his best friend for the leading lady? I'm out of breath just reading all this!
It has been rightly pointed out that "Tora!" "Tora!" "Tora!" gives a better account of the Pearl Harbour attack.
Actually, the film "Battle of Britain" gives a much better account of the actions on the British side of the pond too. It is really annoying to hear a 'British Officer' ... Read More:

Extraordinary film, well worth even twice the money. A cinematography delight in every respect. Doc Holliday steals the film with his wonderful quirky humour and his enigmatic screen prescence, nearly out-shining Mr Earp himself.

The western was always going to be one of genres most likely to impress on HD and boy does this blu-ray transfer hit the spot. Lawrence Kasdan's 1994 three hour epic, sprawling story of Wyatt Earps life from boyhood, through tragedy and vengeance to peaceful 'retirement' was spread over two sides of the Warner DVD release with an average print. The single-sided, continuous letterbox transfer on this blu-ray version is vibrant and needle sharp with an equally impressive HD audio that will have you jumping at every bullet shot and ricochet. The fine orchestral soundtrack by James Newton Howard is also beautifully rendered. There is one particular scene in the latter part of the movie set in a pale rocky canyon that makes you feel you can almost reach out and touch the rocks. This is what blu-ray was ... Read More:

This film is overly long by at least an hour - I mean, was Pacino's suicidal step-daughter's issue ever resolved, more to the point did we ever care? - but the action scenes are competant and the shoot out on the streets of LA is top drawer bang bang. For me, it was a watch-once film, and a watch-the-above-shoot-out-several-times, type of film. Can't recommend it particularly, unless you like shoot-outs, of which, did I mention already, this film includes a very good one. The film could have been improved by adding to the shoot-out scenes and cutting the background scenes - which were meant to add artistic depth and all that, but really just added boring length.
