If you want a night of blood, madness, dirt and sex...this film is for you. It is a great story but I just did not believe in the characters (with the exeption of Henry)and hence did not much care about their fate. This made the film unexciting. Yes it looks great and authentic but every character is portrayed as brutal and none come across as really likable which gives the film an unbalanced feel. You get to the point where you just wish they would all kill each other and be done with it. This is not light entertainment or a tale for the romantic at hearts. It does tell an interesting story if in a somewhat unconvincing and nightmarish way.

Where, oh where, do i begin?? I have to confess, I'm not a fan of Anne Rice's novels. But I did watch Interview with a Vampire and, whilst the film was camper than Lord Baden Powell on a scout mission, i found it quite enjoyable.

So, when I saw the next installment coming out, I decided to go and see it in the cinema with my mate Doug who has also just posted a review.

Awful. Absolutely awful. Why was Stuart Townsend cast for a start? I guess the filmmakers wanted a relatively unknown actor to play Lestat. Well, the film must have done really well as Stuart's a household name now!!!! The man cannot act at all. Clearly his trousers were spray painted on which must have starved him of oxygen for him to act better.

Nikita (Anne Parillaud) is a teenage delinquent, street punk and heroin abuser, who - as a means of securing another fix - participates in the robbery of a pharmacy owned by the parents of her fellow junkie friend. Unfortunately for them, the robbery goes horribly awry, degenerating into a gunfight with the local police, during which, her cohort is killed. Suffering from severe withdrawal symptoms, she shoots a police officer. Nikita is then arrested, tried, convicted of murder, and imprisoned for life, with parole considered after thirty years. In prison, she is drugged to simulate a death sentence; eventually waking up in an anonymous room, where a well-dressed hard man (Tchéky Karyo) enters and reveals to her that, although officially dead and buried ... The DVD from 2000 is very disappointing from a technical point of view, but this is a great improvement (it goes without saying that the film is wonderful). I had the earlier one and gladly replaced it with this and I'm here to spread the good news...

Took me ten years to catch this film had no idea what I had missed.
The film was given to me because of my deep love of Cornwall, in truth I would watch just about any old tripe if it included shots of the Cornish coast I love so dear. This coast has been an inspiration for artists for centuries. On a visit to Cornwall an inspired Richard Wagner wrote the greatest opera ever written - Tristan and Isolde.

Joseph Conrad in his story Amy Foster was at his most insightful. It is largely a story about 'difference' and how a shipwrecked stranger can be treated with hostility by the local community to the point where this endangers his life, Conrad was himself a polish immigrant to England. Amy, for quite diverse reasons is also an 'outsider' and the ... Read More:

In its day a casualty of the chaos and confusion surrounding the frequently ridiculous entry qualifications for the Best Foreign Film Oscar - many superior films were ruled ineligible and those it was competing against were scarcely representative of the world's best - Indochine may not be great art, but it is an enjoyable example of the kind of old-fashioned good storytelling that Hollywood rarely produces anymore.

Set against the last days of the French occupation of what was to later become Vietnam, it uses the relationship between Catherine Deneuve's French plantation owner and her adopted Vietnamese daughter (Linh Dan Pham) as a mirror for the relationship between France and Vietnam. Like the American South, for the privileged few, the French IndoChina is ... Read More:

Boringly self-indulgent French crap. I have nothing against french films, as some are in my top list (Jean de Florette, etc). But this was so terribly boring that I could only watch it at x4 speed, to see if anything mildly interesting might develop - it didn't.

My first wasted film hire!

Beyond the Clouds [1997]

starring: Fanny Ardant, Chiara Caselli, Irène Jacob, John Malkovich, Sophie Marceau
directed by: Michelangelo Antonioni, Wim Wenders
August 22, 2000

The first time I watched this film I was slightly bored - couldn't understand what was being said or why. However, having watched it again recently I took each 'story' at face value and found myself thoroughly enjoying the beautiful camera work and actually making some sense of what the film was about and the various themes at play.

if you're not interested in watching films about the genesis of ideas, this is definitely not for you, but if you just want to sit back and watch a couple of hours of beautiful film making, I would reccomend it.
