I first saw this beautiful and legendary film today and all I can say is, what a gem it really is!
The storyline is wonderful, the acting is truely unbeatable and "Kes" will make you both laugh and cry.
Lynne Perrie who later went on to play Ivy Tilsley in Coronation Street, deserves recognition as a fantastic actress, I loved her in "Corrie", "Queenie's Castle", "Follyfoot", "Leeds United" and of course, her infamous appearances on "The Word" and "Shooting Stars". But perhaps her best work is "Kes" where she plays the mouthy Mrs. Casper.
The other actors are also brilliant and the storyline is strong.
Above all, this film is a truely remarkable piece of work that I can fully recommened you see.

Ken Loach brings us a slice of surprisingly recent history with this story of two brothers and their involvement in the Irish liberation movement of the early 20th Century.

Instead of focussing solely on the historical events, Loach does what he does best and brings us a very personal account of the beginnings of the IRA. We get to see a group with a noble goal split asunder as talk of compromise quickly divides a people united.
There's no patronising obvious groups of `goodies' and `baddies'; we are presented with a society ravaged by the maniacal oppression at the hands of the British military, but a hint is given of the horrors the British army have faced in their recent past - an excuse (thought not a justification) ... A great film demonstrating the power and passion for political ideology in Europe in the the early to mid twentieth century, although also sadly demonstrating the inevitable futility when bound within the human condition. Full of inspiration and courage! Great!

A very good film. i recommend that you watch it to understand the politics of northwern ireland intertwined with the mainland during the troubles. It shows the danger of unchecked and unaccountable security services operating in an enviornment where they can get away with murder and become a law unto themselves, and where civil liberties are trampled upon in the name of a so-called war on terror. A warning for today. You cant help see similarities with todays situation whereby we have repressive legislation and the assasination of Jean Charles Demenezes. I am reminded of a quote from Wilhelm Reich that goes 'who guards the guards, who polices the police'.

"My Name Is Joe" is a typically gritty, unflinching Ken Loach movie from 1998. It stars the excellent Peter Mullan, who gives an amiable performance as recovering alcoholic JOE.

This Glasgow-set story concerns Joe's blossoming relationship with a good-natured social worker named Sarah. The initial harmony of this relationship is soon put under pressure due to Joe's feelings of responsibility for his friend Liam. Liam, you see, has a history of heroin abuse and as a consequence a gang of drug dealing thugs are constantly darkening his door. When Joe learns that Liam is in debt (to the tune of thousands of pounds), his benevolent nature comes to the fore and Joe feels that he has no option but to help his friend. As a result, his relationship with Sarah is threatened ... Read More:

This is the second film I've seen recently tackling the hot topics of immigration and exploitation, the other being Lorna's Silence. It's a Free World is a familiar story of economic migrants from Eastern Europe and beyond travelling to the UK looking for peace and prosperity, or just to raise a family in a safe environment. However when they arrive they find themselves at the bottom of the social ladder, living in cramped and often unhygienic accommodation devoid of work or dignity.

The migrant characters were lightly drawn and only one had even a little colour sketched in - almost enough for us to care for him as a person, but not quite. The acting was average and the cinematography uninspiring.

The story of a single mother struggling to earn a living ... Read More:

The start of this film is typical Ken Loach. Real people living real life in a film so drenched in reality that it could have been filmed using hidden cameras in Glasgow.

Loach does something on screen that I've never seen any other director do. He manages to get performances so realistic that you feel compelled to stay tuned to see what happens - a bit like a soap opera, but good. You genuinely feel for the characters and believe that they exist - this is especially important for a Loach film as they tend to be politically charged - and the people involved HAVE to feel real in order for the politics to matter.

The first part of this film is set in Glasgow and shows how the Jack-the-lad bus driver George lets an exotic looking passenger (Carla) escape from his ... Read More:

Casim Khan, a young Glaswegian Pakistani (Atta Yakub) meets Scottish (or Scots-Irish) music teacher Roisin Hanlon (Eva Birthistle), and the two fall in love. But Casim is from a convention-bound Muslim Pakistani family and has already been promised to another young woman, while the school where Roisin teaches is a Roman Catholic one, and the priest, whose support is vital if Roisin is to get a full contract, takes a dim view of her shenanigans with Casim. A story of the clash between two intolerant cultures, in other words, and of the dire problems that hinder the course of true love in such circumstances. Loach handles the story well enough but is rather let down by the limited acting ability of Atta Yakub, who tries hard but fails conspicuously to convey the depth of passion required ... Read More:

Sweet Sixteen puts the West of Scotland ned firmly onto the big screen. The film follows the trials and travails of 'Liam' (Martin Compston) as he descends from a directionless youth into a seasoned drug dealer. His motives are naively sweet - to create a better life for his dysfunctional family members, especially his mother who is soon to be released from HMP Cornton Vale.

Although hard-hitting and coarse throughout (don't watch this if you're easily offended by those elements of the English language that don't usually feature in dictionaries), Sweet Sixteen also contains much black humour and is a riveting 106 minutes.

Watching this fictional tale, you can't help feeling that, unfortunately, this movie is probably close in some respects to the day-to-day reality ... Read More:
