As the credits rolled I was left feeling emotionally bruised and wondering how could I feel sympathy for such a monstrous character.
This is a character study in the mould of Raging Bull, featuring an equally compelling central performance and inspired cinematography.
Even with an above average running time, I never felt the film dragged and the end was immense. It will surely become am iconic scene.
Casual movie-goers need not apply though, this was made for people who view movies as a visceral thrill not as a way to pass the time.

More than an epic tale of an early 20th Century oilman, this is a fascinating study of the greed for power and what it does to a man.
We meet Daniel Plainview down the bottom of a mine, exerting himself in mind-numbingly monotonous and backbreaking work, looking for gold or silver. He is a man willing to endure pain and humiliation to grasp more money, or more power. As he quickly moves from gold to black gold, he becomes more powerful, and his ruthlessness and underhandedness become more and more apparent, combined with the charisma required to persuade landowners to part with the mineral rights of their property. We learn about how he sees other people when he adopts a boy who he finds useful to put a kind face on his activities, ... Read More:

This is an amazing film, with very high acting skill from Day Lewis. The acting skill of this is just under a Robert De Niro performance, I compare every actor to De Niro as he is the greatest actor of all time!
Daniel gets a 5 out of 5 for his acting, but the story of this film is not great, that is why for me it hits a 3 out of 5. There were 2 films of 2008 that were the best and that's "There will be blood" & "No country for old men" so if you are looking to get one of these in Blu ray and can't decide, then I would recommend "No country for old men". That film gets 5 out of 5 for me as the acting is amazing with an amazing story line.
But if you can get both that's even better, that's what i've done. Final note ... Read More:

I can't understand why this is such a highly rated film!! There is nothing good about it except mindless violence, drug taking and stupid sexual innuendos. Fair enough this film is based on the porn industry so I would be a bit confused if there was no sex in it whatsoever but it's just the way it's shot and acted that seems so tacky. I apologize to people who have put this at the top of their hundred greatest films list but I really disliked it!

This is Adam Sandler's most interesting film to date. It's a dark comedy with excellent acting from the entire cast. Its well written with subtle and dark humour, but judging by some of Adam Sandler's previous movies and by reading some of the reviews on Amazon; it appears that this film is too intelligent for the fans of Adam Sandler.
If your expecting the usual Adam Sandler movie, like the average Happy Gilmore, then you will be disapointed. However, if you like your comedy dark and subtle; then this is for you. This is a very acomplished film.
Sandler plays a man suffering with mental issues resulting from being brought up surrounded by 7 sisters. Although he runs his own business he is socially backward and struggles in the ... Read More:

I read a lot - at least by most people's standards. And I watch quite a few films. And the vast majority of what i read/watch leaves me feeling just so-so. Take it or leave it. Though now and then I'll think something is good. Maybe very good. Five-stars-out-of-five good.
And then - very, very occasionally - you come across something which is another-order-of-magnitude good. Something which just takes your breath away and doesn't give it back until you turn the last page or watch the closing credits roll up in front of you. And you realise that what it's all been for. That's why you've ploughed through all those novels or sat through all those movies. To get to here.
Last year I got there with Victor Pelevin's The Clay Machine Gun. Last night ... Read More:
