I had great expectations of this DVD and first impressions of the sparkling video were encouraging. Then came the 5.1 dts sound. This simply wasn't up to current standards. It sounded muffled with a peculiar fading in and out of instruments. The sound stage was compressed without any illusion of being in a concert hall, rather
lo-fi. I so wanted to be taken in by The Stones but found myself disappointed.

Led Zep in their prime 1968-1980, they had there chance for world domination, but they always wanted us to keep waiting for more. With little or no interviews, no singles, no videos, no live snipits on the old grey whistle test. They didn't count on their drummer snuffing it in Sep 1980. He unfortunately was the best part of the band. 27 years on they play at the o2 arena for just a few select people and couldn't even be bothered to release that on DVD. Good old 'you tube' helped out, but some guys shakey phone from aisle 150 just doesn't cut it. Then just when I thought it was safe there's jimmy page at the Bejing Olympics, fantastic (that'll be enough gigging for 2008 jimmy). Finally Robert Plant needs to wake up before he ends up in a retirement ... Read More:

Can't believe the ridiculous comments of Mr Reed, clearly not a Stone's fan, I've been a Fan since their second single & first album which I purchased when I was at school and remained a Fan ever since, and no, not a Fanatic just a Fan!
I with some other old friends went to the Premiere at one of the chosen Cinema's and we all thought that it was just fantastic, now that I have bought the DVD and played it back in DTS mode with a good high volume I enjoyed it even more. Yes, o.k. Keith's vocal on 'Connection' isn't outstanding but he does do a good job of 'You Got The Silver' and even though Paul Weller's been told for smoking on stage, in the States where the ban came in sooner clearly Keith doesn't give a monkey's, which has always been ... First off as a DVD this is superb, the quality of picture and sound for something that was originally recorded in 1967 will blow you away, as will Jimi's unforgettable performance.
I've been a Hendrix music fan for a good while but I'd never actually seen him play a full set like you do on this DVD, I'd only ever seen brief clippings from documentaries etc before. Why?! Jimi at the Monterey is one of the best musical PERFORMANCES I've ever seen and anybody with even a passing interest in rock music (not just its history) should be forced to watch it, man if he played like that at every gig he played it's no wonder his rise to fame was so meteoric. Even now in 2008 I had to physically attach my lower jaw back to my face after watching the 'sacrifice', ... Read More:

several tracks listed on the USA version have been left off this release e.g. all of Jeff Beck, some of Carlos Santana, some of John Mayer.
The layla performance - title 2 on dvd 2 - is inaccessible via regular menus - how stupid & annoying. If I buy a music DVd I don't expect to have to play childish hide n seek games with it to find the songs.
Despite the hype, this was not Jimi's best concert: it had some great moments but in many places is rather shambolic. This is not surprising, as the Gypsy Sun and Rainbows was under-rehearsed.
The footage is OK, although it concentrates on Hendrix (of course).
Most of the Hendrix hits are there, along with new material like Mitch's `Beginnings' (aka Jam Back at the House, with composition credits going to Jimi) and 'Izabella'. The Star Spangled Banner and the instrumental which follows are the best things in the show.
The DVD is almost twice as long as the original VHS release and has much better sound. However, as with the video, the mix buries the other members of the band (second guitar and two percussionists) apart from Mitch ... Read More:

As a fairly recent convert to Rory Gallagher I would say that this dvd is a pretty good place to start (I'm now in the process of buying all of his albums). I particularly like the blues sound of this performance. Why only 4 stars ? - well, because the editing just doesn't match the quality of the performance (Rory is amazing). Just too many shots of the bass when the action is actually going on with Rory. The acoustic items, however, are simply stunning. RIP Rory - see you all in Ballyshannon next year ?
