Well after being a columbo fan for years I finally said goodbye to adverts and got myself this box set, i cannot believe how cheap it is! the only downside is the DVD's themselves could be better protected, instead of flimsy cardboard sleeves, but hey you can buy those plastic sleeves from asda for about a fiver! so totally worth it!

Season 8 contains only 4 episodes,(On 2 DVD's) very dissapointing. If you are a serious Columbo fan my advice would be to buy the boxed set, seasons 1-8 as this is a far better way to get hold of all those great series for much less...

This surely includes one of the best episodes of Columbo ever in Try and Catch Me.Ruth Gordon co stars and is excellent in the part of a murder mystery writer. It's set in a lovely location and house and demands to be watched again and again.The chemistry between Peter Falk and Ruth Gordon is electric. 10/10.

There are enough detective shows that even the most hardcore detective show fan could be forgiven for losing count of them, they really are ten a penny but none of them in my opinion will ever match the brilliance of this.
Although I like the odd one here and the odd one there, I have never been a massive fan of detective programmes and I can't think of one that I like more than Columbo, this is not me being in anyway nostalgic as this masterpiece of a detective programme began before I was born. The first season set had six DVDs. The box sets seem to be getting smaller each time and now we're down to just three discs. So that's six episodes and one 'bonus', an episode of Mrs Columbo.
But, I suppose it's just down to the number of episodes in each season. It's a shame they haven't kept the same style of packaging throughout the series - this one doesn't have the attractive multi-disc system, just three separate slim cases. Luckiliy, the six episodes in the fourth season are some of the best, including one of my favourites where Columbo investigates a murder at a military academy. I'm a great Columbo Fan and had no problem with Box Sets 1 and 2 but was surprised to find that Disc 3 of the box set shipped to me is the same as Disc 2. Although it clearly states on the disc that it is Disc 3, when played it is definetly Disc 2.

What's a mid-range columbo? Way above average by most peoples' standards!
If you've seen most other columbos's by the time you come to this series, you may be a little underwhelmed. I wasn't. The freshness or rawness from the first season or two, has been replaced by a more comfortable. This is detective fiction, not science fiction or fantasy. So the Columbo character is older and naturally has to evolve. Over the lifetime of the Columbo franchise the producers have tinkered with the format. This has not always been for the better. Beginning with Season 2, Universal began releasing syndication cut episodes as "complete and uncut" episodes. In the United States back in the 70's the Columbo episodes typically were aired in a 90 minute format; later on it was 120 minutes. Of those 90 minutes, 8 minutes were taken out for commercials. In syndication, and additional 8 minutes were cut for commercials; hence 74 minutes. In some episodes, characters are introduced as having been in the episode earlier...though you never see the initial introduction of the character. This gets worse with the later episodes in later sets that aired in 2 hour time slots. Be careful when you buy these. I contacted Universal and they refused to refund money. Peter Falk is superb as the quirky detective. Have you ever noticed that he never leaves a room the first time - he always 'remembers' something else he needs to ask! The music is also excellent and the plots believable. They don't make them like this any more - and that's a great shame.

On the face of it this set seems reasonable value for money, but it is let down by by the quality of the storage box, a lack of episode information on the DVDs and the fact that you need another 24 episodes for a complete collection.
To add further detail to previous reviews, this set contains 45 episodes. Episodes 46 to 69 (Series 8 - 11 and the 8 specials are not included. Presently the only way to get every episode, in one set, is to subscribe to the official collection from Hachette part works (http://www.columbocollection.com/index.html). This works out at close to £300.00 after you have collected all 35 DVDs (and binders for the included magazines). However if you are a serious Columbo fan that might be a price worth paying.
