I have just finished watching this set. I had seen some early episodes originally but watched all again. It is almost a bit "Lost on Mars" as the early series now do seem dated or rather perfectly portraying that time - the early 1990s. I found myself watching the clothes of DCI Tennison and of course the ageing of her in her character with all the trials and tribulations faced by a woman in the police force and in her personal life. She is a demanding , admirable yet imperfect character and it is heart wrenching to see the last episode when retirement beckons. Absolutely fantastic performance by Helen Mirren and of course the rest who make their characters just so believable!

I recently watched all of Prime Suspect again, having bought the box set. This last episode was heart wrenching and I cried on several occasions. Helen Mirren's portrayal of her character as she goes through her various issues in this - getting older, no children, no partner, the approaching death of her father , her alcohol addiction - was more than an Oscar winning performance. The death of a previous colleague as well adds to all of this. These issues are ones that we all face as we age and they are intermingled with this final case when it seems like she has lost her touch. I don't think I've ever seen a drunk portrayed in such a realistic yet gut wrenching way.

Having read the previous reviews, I must, first of all, declare an interest here, and, that interest is this:
I was fortunate enough, in my time at Granada, to work on this, and, a few other top-quality programmes, so, there's not a lot I can add, except to say, that, in its day, Granada hired the best writers, the best directors, the best designers, and, used the best production staff. "Brideshead Revisited", "Jewel in the Crown", "Sherlock Holmes", "Prime Suspect", "Cracker". The list is endless, and, the results speak for themselves.
Nowadays, unfortunately, mediocrity seems to be the name-of-the-game, and, an ever-increasing plethora of television channels, and, a cottage-industry of production companies, seems to have ... Read More:

... because you'd never leave the house at all. Prime Suspect is a terrific show, and this is a fine installment. I watched all three hours of it in one sitting, completely gripped. Plenty has been written about how excellent Helen Mirren is as DCI Tennison, but the excellence extends throughout the entire cast. Even the most minor characters are fully-fleshed, unstereotyped, and convincingly real. None of them has any hint of 'central casting' about them. My favourite was Phoebe Nicholl's grey blur of a spook: dull, round-shouldered, unnoticeable, and wonderfully sinister. And all done in two short scenes. This is television at its best.
