Whilst this probably isn't the best western ever made its certainly up there amongst the top flight. It was fortunately made a few years before 'A Fistful of Dollars', which changed westerns and what was expected from them.
Take the classic Kurosawa film 'Seven Samurai' (which is given its due in the opening credits) and reinvent it in the American west. Then add the staggeringly good cast of Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Eli Wallach, James Coburn and Robert Vaughan and what you have is a near perfect piece of Cinema. Some of these guys (like McQueen) were not the bigshots they would later become, but they are incredibly cool. Just a look is enough for these actors. For example, James Coburn hardly says a word throughout ... Read More:

I resisted going to see this film at the cinema as it didn't seem like my cup of tea. But after a colleague kept going on about how great it was, I gave in and watched it. I wish I hadn't bothered. I really cannot see what all the fuss is about. Now, if you've read any other DVD reviews of mine, you'll know I do like superhero films, sci-fi films etc. But Transformers really left me cold. It didn't keep my interest at all, but I had to watch it through to the end just to see if it got better. I'm afraid it didn't.
There's no doubt that the special effects are impressive - but I just thought this comic book origination didn't translate well to screen. I can't really put my finger on what turned me off, but there was so much about it that had me ... Read More:

This ranks with Alien and Bladerunner. It's clever, funny, has believable characters and is well plotted. I can't believe ppl find it difficult.
It just gets better with each viewing.

Comparisons to the equally beautiful 'In The Mood for Love' are well targeted here and not just because of the Tony Leung connection. Lust, Caution exhibits the same muted (almost mutilated) sexual tensions against a back drop of middle-class, Western-obsessed indifference which suffocates in a vacuum of talking without communicating. Indeed, the title is like a road sign for those wishing to escape the numbness of existence: Danger follows if unheeded...
The performances are sublime as is the photography and editing (the Mah-Jong sequences deserve a special award) but it is the direction which triumphs. Ang Lee is the unchallenged master of cinema which finds beauty in an ugly world (The Ice Storm sprung to mind on several occassions) and here he surpasses ... Read More:

I was bowled over by this series. I'd never seen it on TV until I bought it in Thailand (yes an offical copy too). The Thais love the series too right from my 60 year old Uncle to my 2 year old Daughter. This show could run for years.....

...Oh, you thought that was The Wire? Th Shield is much better. Everything here is driven by character - and these are some of the most fascinating, flawed, complex characters to be found anywhere in fiction. There are none of the archly winsome performances and "writerly" dialogue and scene juxtapositions that in The Wire keep reminding you that you're watching a work of fiction. The Shield sucks you right in. Start at the beginning and you're in for a visceral experience that is the nearest TV drama has got to Shakespearean tragedy.

this box set is one of the best box set we have seen in recent years....they are films that will be remembered for along time......its a change to what we usually see coming out of hollywood, like all the blood and gore films..or the none stop shooting ones ....... not that they arent good films they are its just good to see that they can produce something else for a change, with a great star studded cast ..i mean they gotta be good to have a star cast like they have ......and this is defintly a film for the ladies not so much for the plot but for the cast anything with matt damon, brad pitt and george cloney in gets my vote ...... i also think that how the plot always has a twist keeps u watching and wanting to no more ..its great how everything is unveiled at the end... i feel that ... the first 20 minutes of this film is mind blowing with the d-day beach landings where the soldiers just run into artillery fire and bombs it's so realistic it's frightning.
but then the action slows down has we follow the rescue mission , the cast all perform brilliantly and the "master" mr spielberg keeps us entertained throughout the journey but after the start to the film any other action scene's will obviously dissapoint.this film is a must buy for all war film fans just for the brutal battle scene's alone.

On this occasion I found myself liking the movie more than the book. What stood out for me as a child was the wolf figure who stated at the end of the film this startling notion that people who forgot their dreams and lost their hopes were easy to control and who ever has the control has the power ... I wondered how that could come about. Now I see that behind the film was possibly a critique on our modern standard of living and the world of Fantasia, a world of the spirit, imagination and dreams does not want to allow it's self to be usurped by mans casual disregard for those qualities. The film asserts that real freedom is the freedom of the mind and to have self belief in the face of astonishing obstacles is the only way to move forward. This is a modern day fairy tale which I believe has made ... Read More:

This is a lovely animated film, a million miles away from the butt-kicking gore-fest that is the usual Manga fare.
The story is about a girl who discovers she can move through time after avoiding a collision at a level crossing that would have resulted in her death. She uses this power to fix things in her past, but soon learns that the consequences of her "fixes" are far from good.
The story's mix of teen love with heavier subject matter doesn't always work, but generally this film does a good job throughout. The only realy criticism is that the ending is drawn out a little too long after the revelation of how the time-travel gift is obtained. It was one false ending away from me not really caring anymore! As it was, though, it was a beautful and moving ending between Chiaki ... Read More:
