Allegedly 'groundbreaking' when released, what's surprising today is how theatrical and shamelessly unrealistic this film is. Frears creates a surreal London night landscape which is mostly lit with coloured gels, peopled by bootshod racist yobs who would be more at home in A Clockwork Orange, and besuited Asian mafiosi who try (and fail) to look mean. All this could be quite entertaining, except the visuals are let down by a Kureishi's awful, clunking script and some very wooden acting - even Day-Lewis looks awkward and embarrassed. The synth-driven original soundtrack is wince-inducing.

'Hounded' (entitled 'Punish Me' in North America), from the ever-intriguing Picture This! stable, revolves around a 16 year old male's intense relationship with his parole officer, a woman in her 50s.
Jan, incarcerated for numerous property offences and car theft, and is released to a sort of 'halfway house' institution under the supervision of parole officer Elsa. Cold, detached Elsa (oddly reminiscent of Helen Mirren) has a lukewarm relationship with her husband, a mechanic, and is clearly at a crossroads in her life after her grown-up daughter has moved out of the family home.
16 year old Jan (played by 23 year old Kostja Ullman, the stunning lead in 'Summer Storm') is something of an enigma; quite deliberately, ... Read More:

I only took a liking to this film when I watched it with the director's commentary. It's an incredibly sweet story about a black girl from an upper middle classed background and a white girl from a working class background. The story isn't so complex, but then that's not what this film is about. It's incredibly sunny and optimistic, which at first seems unrealistic. For example, the ending is more like a comedy sketch, and a teenager dating a thirty-something broad seems really unlikely. But it's about coming out, finding your first love - and I think that is very well portrayed. Randy and Evie are remarkably cute, and I wonder why I haven't seen them elsewhere.
This is clearly a budget film - if you watch closely, you'll see there ... Read More:

Though not bad this film sadly does not reach out and grab you. The fact that the brothers have not spoken in a while is explained in a blink or you will miss it moment. There is a scene where the gay brother has quite an intense kiss with a staight woman. In no film could I imagine a straight man in similar circumstances having an intense kiss with a man. For me, too much was left unsaid between the brothers and the gay brother spent most of his time on screen with his head down. Like I said, this isn't a bad film, I just do not want anyone to think that it is truely great when it sadly is not, at least in my opinion.

I liked the fact the characters were all mixed up - not all devastatingly attractive - quite ordinary really most of them. It seems a bit pedestrian for quite a long time as the different characters are introduced. But things start to come together as they meet and mix and the film seems to go in an arc towards the (perhaps predictable) ending. Quite funny, quite "ordinary" film. Not over the top on the emotions, actually quite true to life in some ways. Everyone has their own life, their own dramas and I think it was good that the main gay relationship was portrayed as really "only" another "unique" relationship of two people where no-one's perfect and everyone is hung up a bit about something. Makes a change from the romantic "young guys falling in love" ... Read More:
