I watched this for the first time in a friends house on an ancient Beta video player in 1985. I enjoyed it and having watched it again recently for the first time in an attempt to understand why alot of grown men love Star Wars i was disappointed and mystified.
Is it any good? No. R O T J was the Star Wars film which thrilled me most as a child. I loved the ewoks, though now I find them to be a bit irritating and pointless in terms of plot. I loved the scenes in Jabba's palace, though now I think the use of Jim Henson's Creature Workshop was a bit over the top. I remember watching this film when i was growing up and decided to have a flashback so i went online to buy this little beutie of a film.
I forgot how much i loved the character of Farmer hogget, amazingly played and he makes me feel all warm inside, wish he was my grandad :P and who could forget about those cheerful little mice as a nice little extra. First saw this in a double feature with Monty Python and the Holy Grail thinking it was a B-movie - how wrong I was. This is sheer perfection - the acting, script, set designs, lighting etc. etc. There is nothing to fault in this film and it guarantees plenty of laughs at every viewing. Gene Wilder : never better; Marty Feldman : priceless.

Ignore those who say that this doesn't do justice to the books - it's different, yes, but in a good way. What's the point in sitting down to watch something that's EXACTLY like the book, or complaining because it doesn't EXACTLY match what you thought it should look like? The BBC made an amazing job of what was almost impossible to film, and the cast is just perfect. Jonathan Rhys Meyers plays Steerpike with more than a touch of genius, and the chemistry between him and Fuchsia is spot-on... Everything about this is awe-inspiring; the sets, the scripts, the acting. Admittedly, Warren Mitchell's portrayal of Barquentine is more comical and capricious than the fearsome and powerful character in the book, but it works. Young married couple Adam and Barbara Maitland (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) are staying home for their vacation. This is an improvement on Series 7 for sure. A return to the original way of filming (in front of a studio audience) makes a huge difference. Chloe Annette is much more settled in her role and the return of Rimmer as a main character, and the original Holly also contributed to the vast improvement in this series. Red Dwarf has now been reconstructed by nanobots and the crew are basically back where they started. All Lister, Kochanski, Kryten and Cat have to do is explain it all to the newly resurected crew.
The original concept of the show - the last human being in the universe being stranded in outer space with a hologram, a creature evolved from his pet cat, a mechanoid and a senile compter - is lost and that's why I still don't think it quite makes the standard ... Read More: >>More Details |

The plot has been well-summarised in other reviews, but hats off first to animator Richard Williams, the man who not only created the cartoon characters but made them interact so convincingly with the humans. Nowadays we take computer animation so much for granted it would be easy to underestimate the complexity and painstaking detail involved in not only reproducing so many well-loved cartoon characters but integrating them, and the original toon characters of the movie, frame by frame, 14 to the second, for the full 99 minutes. You only have to compare this with previous attempts like Gene Kelly's dance with Jerry the Mouse in "Anchors Aweigh" Anchors Aweigh [1945] (REGION 1) (NTSC)], or the Sinbad sequence in "Invitation to the Dance" (currently unavailable), or Disney efforts like ...
