This story does not cut it over six episodes. The two halves of the story - the transition from the Vardans to the Sontarans just disjoints the narrative.
It is a shame. The concept is a good one - a stealth invasion of Gallifrey. However the Vardans are as unconvincing as the Baco-Foil around my sunday roast. This is only held together by the strong performances by Tom Baker (as ever!) and Louise Jameson. If it weren't for these two, I would have switched off during the strung out pointless wandering around corridors that pads out this story. Get it only if you want a complete collection of Doctor Who - and if you don't have the other Sontaran stories, then it is probably better value as part of the "Bred For War" ... Let's be honest, this is not a good movie. It does capture the spirit of the original and the neo-fascist future government allows for the usual Veehoeven humour BUT... clearly the budget was tiny and Van Dien, Blalock and Donohoe must have sucked up most of the cash and they must also really need the money.
We had some gratuitous nudity, plenty of blood and guts and rolling heads. We had the usual TV newscast 'would you like to see/know/buy (lol !) more' but the animation was poor and the sub-plot of the Sky Marshall (also celebrity singer) being controlled by the bugs didn't really work. Running David (Max Thieriot) loves little Millie (AnnaSophia Robb) with a love that couldn't die. He couldn't swim the raging river; but he leaned how to jump. What would you do if you found the ability to transport? Yep the first plan was to exacta all not nasty old paper in the local bank. Where do we go from here? For one thing it irks some people including fanatic "jumper hunter" Roland (Samuel L. Jackson.) We find new friends and enemies no known in the book. have bought this box set for my daughter as she is a huge nicholas lyndhurst fan and already has the boxed set of Only fools and horses.Both of my daughters absolutely love this show and even though they have watched the reruns over and over again they never get tired of it..not only is it funny but it also help with year six course work on ww2 as it bought it to life.
now we have this set i might be able to clear my skyplus of the many goodnight sweethearts that are saved on it... great price too.. >>More Details |

It seems like overkill. A five disc box set focused on a single film. Six different versions of the original film, plus an exhaustive array of extras - documentaries, commentaries, out-takes, interviews, concept art, screen tests. Surely only obsessives and the professionally interested could possibly want all this?
But this isn't like other dvd sets. No dull, half-baked `documentaries' that tell you nothing more than star A thinks director B is a great director, Director B thinks star A is a top chap, and everyone thinks the guy who deputy managed Computer Effects Team C did a super job. This is one of my favourite films. The cast are obviously enjoying being in it as well which makes it nice to watch. There's some wonderful barbed dialogue and the performances are (while maybe a little broad at times) excellent. The reason this gets 4 stars and not 5 is the DVD itself.
It's only a bare bones release. There are a lot of deleted scenes from the film (including an entire subplot featuring Tracey Ullmann) that were cut out! In fact if you look up the trailer (youtube etc) for the film some of these scenes can be seen. Making it extremely frustrating that they are not included here. In this world of "Special Editions" and constantly repackaged DVD's can't somebody at the marketing department suggest a re-release of "Death Becomes Her"? >>More Details |
