The unrelenting echo of the sonar punctuates this understated J. Arthur Rank film with a taut atmosphere of suspense. Novelist Eric Ambler's intelligent script remains faithful to Nicholas Monserrat's novel about the last voyage of HMS Compass Rose and all who sailed on her. The splendid performances of Jack Hawkins as her captain and Donald Sinden as his #1 bring the novel to life, as do the performances of the entire ensemble cast, which includes Denholm Elliott. One of the best aspects of the Rank organization films of this era is the devotion that went into the delineation of even the minor characters.
Some viewers may shun this picture because it was filmed in black and white. This is a shame, because "The Cruel Sea" is so ... Read More:

this film is quite comical really but it actually entertains you throughout and there is plenty of action to keep you interested.
i prefer this to eastwoods earlier war film "where eagles dare" this is definatly more enjoyable and lighthearted. but the real star of this film is old kojack himself who puts in a sterling effort trying to control his troops but will they get their gold ?

One of the best war films ever - puts all the stereotyped heroics into their proper perspective..... most of the time nothing much happens, action-wise that is, ( and it's all the more realistic for that ) , but there is a lot going on psychologically, within the crew, and within ourselves as we watch the voyage unfold - for example, the crew are flawed human beings, and missionic zeal is not approved of........ rather they crave 'action' as a relief from the immense tension and tedium of living with each other for weeks on end..... we quickly identify with them ( some more than others ) almost forgetting that they were 'the other side ' - it's true, we don't want them to sink , we don't seek 'retribution' - so the film has done it's job in 'humanising' the ... Dirty war in Algerie, between FLN (employing in the 50' same "terror tactics" of today terrorists in the same place .... ah the story ...) and French troops. Not the "abitual, brutal,Legionnaires" but a platoon of young boys (with some "old fox" reduces from WWII) leaded by the classic Officer and Gentlemen (only in principle ..) and by a veteran "hardboiled" NCO. The plot is poor (battlefield "routine") but action scenes are well made (with a correct choise of weaponry - from MAT 49 machineguns to the chopters and the Vampire "attack" jet). A good, sad, bloody war film, in an "exotic" scenario.

A quaint peaceful english village, more at home on a picture post card or jigsaw puzzle is the setting for this wonderful piece of WW2 propoganda. Bramley End (not Bromley) houses the usual suspects, lady of the manor, clergyman, policeman, postmistress etc etc, there is even a poacher.
Little did they know that a troop of army engineers were not what they appeared, but were in fact nazi paratroopers, dropped to disrupt british radio transmissions ahead of an impending invasion.
The outcome of WW2 was in the balance in 1942, with Churchill preaching 'total war', along with 'Mrs Miniver' this film is designed to not only raise the country's moral, but to also emphasise that everyone has a part to play (including the film industry). This they did ... Read More:

Why has nobody reviewed this series before? Winds of War, and its follow-on series War and Remembrance (unfortunately only available in region 1 coding) is the best war drama, and probably even the best dramatic series I've ever watched.
Superbly acted, brilliantly directed, historically accurate and faithful to the book, you will be riveted from start to the sad and moving ending.
Made for US television, was it ever shown on TV in this country? It's surprising if not as it is very pro-British.
Taking several years to film, in the late eighties, there is some loss of continuity between the two series, because some of the actors had to be changed. But it gets better as it goes on.
'Cromwell' is a great movie with great actors about a great person from English history (Cromwell and not the king!). Bring on an English republic once more I say!
