Winchester `73 was the film that moved director Anthony Mann from the b-movies to the big league, rescuing James Stewart's floundering post-war career in the process by casting him as a conflicted hero (although since he inherited the project from Fritz Lang, maybe Lang deserves the credit for that). burt lancaster plays a mexican sheriff who accidentley kills a man while trying to save him from a rich ranchers posse.when the posse say it was the wrong man and joke about it,valdez then asks for compensation for the mans indian wife and the ranchers laugh louder.when valdez asks again they badly beat him and tie him to a cross and make him walk across the desert,valdez then recovers and goes after justice.the bad things about this film is lancasters very dodgy accent "its very hard to understand",then when you finally start enjoying the film you get so dissapointed with the worst ending i have seen to a film "totally bizarre".thats why it only gets 2 stars from me lancaster made much better westerns than this offering. >>More Details

sadly i read the above review about this film and was expecting a 5 star performance. this is easily the worst duke western i have seen,there is more singing from the soldiers than action in this film,the making of the rio grande was more entertaining than the film itself.although this is one of the trio of ford/wayne cavalry westerns its not in the same league has the other 2,luckily most of the dukes westerns are 5 star films so we should accept the odd poor offering i suppose. >>More Details

I can't understand people who write reviews like the previous reviewer, he is nitpicking. He is obviously a professional critic, only those people write such rubbish. This film is one of the best westerns made, it is a superior movie to the one eastwood made with the same title. The acting is superb, what can you expect, when you have such an all star pedigree cast. If you love westerns and want a good film to pass the evening, when there is nothing interesting on the box. The Godfather I [1972] Marlon Brando is too fat, he mumbles etc.. are all, the usual quotations, about this ULTIMATE actor. When he refused his academy award for 'The Godfather', there was a big hue and cry, as if he had committed some hedious crime. But he is 'the ultimate method-acter'. In 'The Missouri Breaks, he plays a Bounty Hunter. Jack Nicholson co-stars. There is one particular scene in the film which every horse-lover will cherish. Brando pets his horse and rubbing noses with her,says,"you have the lips of cleopatra and the eyes of salome". Tell me, how many actors have so blatantly demonstrated their love of animals? As a rule, mini series have aspired to the label `epic'. By having starrier cast names, bigger sets, and of course more worldwide locations. This early mini series from the late 70's did something different - it kept the same location - the fictional town of Centennial, and charted the creation and evolution of the land and then the town, and the people that came and had an impact.
