The more sinister the character, the better Audie Murphy's performance. Here, his character is more overtly evil (with Charles Drake taking on the boring goodnik role) as a known killer-for-hire who has just arrived in town setting off a paranoidal furor. And how Audie embodies cool! Dressed in black. Shaping his laidback Texas twang into something ominous. Confident. And dangerous.
He was generally dismissed as a non-actor. And Audie believed it too. So I don't know what it was he was doing in this movie, but I wish he did it more often. And I wish other actors could learn to do it, too.
This is a thoughtful Western with just enuf action to qualify as such and to keep the groundlings happy. Topping it off, there is ... Read More:

As much as I like Wagon Train this DVD production is terrible. Part of the nostalgia in seeing these old series is the opening & closing titles as much as the stories. Sadly, apart from the story title segment at the beginning of each episode, these are completely missing. The quality is bad, which didn't worry me that much, but why they hacked off the opening and closing titles I don't understand. If you recognise an actor & can't place him you'll have to look the story up on the net as there is not even the cast list on these.
It's interesting to see these early black & white John McIntire episodes as they haven't been shown on TV in the UK probably since the original transmission, but the production value of this DVD is more than ... Read More:

Just have to balance these other reviews, because I bought this to add to my collection and was very disappointed. Nothing at all special here.

bear in mind i picked this up for £8 on here for a new set.there are 7 films 2 of which are b/w.there are some top western stars in this set and i got unbelievable value.if you look at the individual films you will see some very good ratings buy them in this set and you can still save £20-£35 the only quibble is the cardboard package the films are housed in,but there are some quality westerns in the set.a must buy in my opinion.

This is a nice family western, not too heavy with some great comedy moments. It's just nice to put your boots up n'ease back in your chair to enjoy a film from start to finish. There's no deep message or questionable casting it's just a good natured rowdy romp.
John Wayne and Stewart Granger work really well together as do all the key players. This ain't gonna be up there with the greatest westerns of all time but it has a fantastic cast, some nice set pieces including the obligatory saloon fight and what else can I say -it's all here.
If you want some easy going fun in the west then look no further. Adios.

There's a lot wrong with Walter Hill's Geronimo: An American Legend. For a start, there's far too little of the magnificent Wes Studi and far too much of the unconvincingly one-note (and an off-key note at that) Jason Patric and a milquetoast Matt Damon when we want to spend more time with Geronimo. As John Milius said, "I wrote a script about a mighty warrior chief. They made a film about a ***king white male model." Not to mention film critic Larry Gross' rewrite is overly partial to other movies, particularly The Magnificent Seven and Alan Sharp's script for Ulzana's Raid. And, like all historical manhunt movies, it winds down as attrition wins over courage. Yet despite its flaws it's still one of the most impressive American Westerns of the past few decades.
