Stereo speakers with a bass port. In miniature. Weird shape - about 6.5" at it's longest, and 1.5" thick. No buttons or controls - a red LED comes on when you connect your MP3 player or whatever. The cable you get is about 18" long with 3.5mm stereo jacks at either end. Works great with a cheapie MP3 player - there's a tiny Bass Port on the edge of the A-60 and it actually does provide some bass! Not that you're ever going to get a big sound out of something so small, but for something you can throw in a backpack or briefcase it's brilliant. The mesh over the speakers feels pretty tough and the unit itself feels like it can take a lot of knocks. The Franklin DMQ-450 Collins Dictionary with Thesaurus strikes a good balance between price and features. It's easy to use and initial set-up (local time, font size, etc.) is aided by the brief user guide printed on the inside of the lid - although this is also very simple to do.
My wife, Anna, uses this DMQ-450 in her job as a teacher very successfully. She mentioned that the unit can store a personal word list, but not more than one, and that some phonetically spelled words are not identified. For instance, while "ECCSEPSHONAL" returns "EXCEPTIONAL" as an option (eventually!), "BORT" does not return "BOUGHT", as she had hoped.
