If you want to lose weight and enjoy your food, this book will give you a head start. The recipes are really healthy...and although living in Spain, I have difficulty in getting some of the ingredients, it is easy to substitute with other low GI foods. My husband and I decided we had to change our diet but love fruit and vegetables. I tried a few of the recipes in this book and we are hooked. It helps to plan your recipes for the week, then , when you are hungry, you don't have to make a decision which may lead to buying a quick fix food!

This book is written by a biophysicist and medical doctor and the effect sodium has on cells in the body is described from physical principals that are scientifically proven. This is then augmented with compelling anthropological evidence and case studies. It makes extremely interesting reading and I got through it very quickly.
What you should know:
Lowering salt/sodium intake alone is of no use at all unless you can actually decrease the ratio of sodium to potassium that you eat.
High blood pressure is just one of the more visible symptoms caused by not getting enough potassium compared to sodium. If you eat too much salt then you can still be at high risk of heart disease and stroke even without having ... Read More:

I bought this book simply because making cheese at home was something I always wanted to have a go at, but never knew where to start. I mean, I know I can go to a cheese-making suppliers, and buy kits, and get recipes off the internet, but what I wanted was just all the details of what I would need and how to go about making cheese, all in one easy chunk.
Enter this book. Quite simply, it is fantastic. There is the right amount of detail at all stages to tell you what you need to do, and what you need to get hold of. The section on the various processes involved in making cheese was perfect, aimed not to high or low, and explained everything exceptionally well. The recipes which finish this book are a good selection, even if it has ... Read More:

This is a great book. It is written in easy going colloquial language that relays a complex subject in plain English. Dr Kendrick does an excellent job of methodically demolishes the Diet-Heart disease axiom one block at a time. Finally the reader is left with the unnerving conclusion that it is not in the vested interests of the massively powerful pharmaceutical companies, (that have invested billions in the development of statin drugs), to acknowledge what one Scottish doctor seems to have done in a single paperback, BUT.... I have a couple of very minor reservations about this book.
Firstly it would have been a nice touch if it had been properly referenced. Dr Kendrick does put a few references in but instead entreats the reader to ... Read More:

This book is unrealistic to say the least. To exist on vegetables, nuts and seeds, not much fruit, no meat, no dairy, and very little fish. You may drink water, juices made from vegetables and grasses and green drink. One also has to take lots of supplements, most of them I have never heard of. The authors also recommend a cleanse or fast before starting the diet of three to ten days.
I personally would NOT recommend this book. I think the way forward is to make a positive attempt to make the diet more alkaline, and we all know the optimum is 80/20. Can anyone recommend a book that deals with acid/alkaline balance in a more realistic fun way?

This is an East Asian approach to nutrition; don't let that put you off though. Give this book a chance and you will not regret it. I have many books on nutrition both in the western and eastern view and this one I always refer back too.
Eastern approach to nutrition breaks away from the western idea that one diet suits everyone. Follow the guide to your constitution and optimum health will follow. Uses the five element theory.
I could never understand why I was always so tired, lethargic and mucusy until I followed the advice in this book and cut out eating dairy and consumed more bitter flavoured foods recomended for "damp" bodies. My hair/ Skin/ fitness and general zest-for-life have all seen a vast improvement.
If i could i would give this book more that ... Read More:
